Is this pot the right size for my tomato plant (tumbler - Mr Fothergill's Cherry Falls)? A friend thinks that it is too big, although they have never grown tomato plants.
The pot is approx. 10.5 inch/26.5cm long, and approx. 7inch/18cm wide at the bottom. The grow bag stuff/compost in it is 1.5 inches less than the height of the pot.
The length of the pot and plant together is 31inch/79cm.
I was not expecting a tumbler to grow as high as this.
I have included a can of tomatoes to help show the size.
I did not sow the seeds till the middle of April, and the trusses are only just now appearing.
Thanks for replies.

The pot you are using is probably not unreasonable but I use larger ones, certainly not smaller.

I'm a bit puzzled as to why you've got your tomato plant staked up tumbler varieties are grown to hang down not grow upwards. Often grown in large hanging baskets.

Ojibway93 and Bulbaholic - I take it that you mean for the tumbler type. I know that the climbing types need a lot of compost - ideally one grow bag (or contents of) for two plants.
Moon growe - I tied it to a cane to make sure it does not fall down. If it grows down I will put it on the edge of a table to let the tomatoes drop. I think that hanging baskets are generally smaller than this pot, so perhaps this pot is big enough for the job. What do you think?
I have started wondering if this is not a tumbler type atall and if someone made a mistake when filling the packet of seeds!
Thanks again.

It isn't doing much 'tumbling' is it? Could be a cherry tomato.

It doesn't look like the tumbler types I have seen - not that we have grown them ourselves.

Yes I agree with both of you. It is too high for the hanging baskets which I have, and it does not look like the picture on the packet of seeds. I wonder if there was a mistake when they were packed. Have you ever come across this? I am also growing F1 Sweet Million in my greenhouse, but I do not think that I muddled them up with Cherry Falls. They look as if they are the type which grow high.

I've only grown tumblers once, in a hanging basket, and I was surprised at how tall they got before the stems actually started to bend and eventually 'tumble' over the edge of the basket - they were certainly hitting the bracket, though probably not as tall as this plant! Could the fact that you've tied the stem to a cane be stopping it tumbling?

I just released the plant from the cane, and the whole thing wanted to fall over in one direction, so I do not think it is like the tumblers you had - thanks for the suggestion though.

Actually that sounds just like the ones I had! Once they (I had 2 or 3 in the basket) had reached quite a size the main stem of each plant fell in one direction over the side of the basket that it was closest to, and the whole plant went with it. But they were a different variety to what yours should be so not necessarily the same growing habit. Good luck with it anyway :o)

I had a bush type that I grew in a hanging basket last year, and it did not grow as high as this at all. I recall now that I also grew two tumblers in previous years, and they were not like this, nor did the main stem fall over the side of the pot! lol. Can you remember the name of the type you had, or do you still have the label?
I have contacted Mr Fothergills about this, and I will let you all know the result.

I found the label, and some photos, and have put them in a blog for you :o)

It turned out that there was a mistake with the seeds. However, the tomato plants that I have instead are doing well, and so I chose not to accept the kind offer of a replacement packet of seeds.

« I have a daisy bush 'olearia' which is growing out of control, it has finish...
I used to grow tomatoes when I had a greenhouse and the pots I used were actually bigger than this. But see what others think?
