New Garden

In August I moved from my home Scotland to share a house with my Fiance in Dorset. We had a very mature and out of control back garden and a very weedy lawn at the front with empty borders against the house. In my old house I had a garden that had some very good pockets in it. My parents had lived close by me and my mum is a very accomplished gardener who gave me a lot of help. Now I’m all the way down south and trying to work it out more on my own (still getting a lot of help over the phone).
We have since taken everything out of the back garden. The central bed was filled with Heather and a rotten tree. The only things we left was the Viburnum in the corner, a Fuchsia, the climbing rose which I cut back to the ground in the hope to reshape and the clematis. The previous owners had left plant labels attached to everything but I foolishly threw them out with noting what everything was.

wow that is a lot of hard work being undertaken there. I think you are going to have a lovely garden in no time.

Nice to be able to start from scratch, you can plan it however you want :) Good luck !
If you're not sure about something you can also ask on here as well as your mother. People are always willing to give advice.

Welcome to Growsonyou, Rachel, that's quite a wide garden isn't it? Just remember Rome wasn't built in a day so take it steady and slow!

Well, with your enthusiasm and your mother's expertise on call, I reckon you will have a fantastic garden very soon.
Watch out, Karen! You'll have competition.
Seriously, welcome to Dorset. It's a beautiful county.

I just knew whose garden this was and lo' and behold I was right. Welcome to Goy Rachel, it seems we have watched you grow up through the years and now we can watch you in the garden, only need Olive back again and we will have three generations. I wish you every happiness in your home and if you enjoy the garden as much as Karen and Olive always have done then you will be one happy person, I look forward to following your gardening blogs...

Beautifully put Sue.
Welcome Rachel, looking forward to seeing your garden develop.

Hi Rachel, I too just knew you had to be Karen's daughter, it would have been too much of a coincidence for 2 girls with the same name, and an accomplished gardener for a mother, moving to Dorset from Scotland.
I would welcome you, but your profile says you joined in April 2013,
You have a lot of work ahead of you, but you've made a good start, and I will look forward to seeing your garden develop over the years, Derek.

Thank you all for your kind words. I’m super excited to see how it all turns out. It is fairly wide Shirley but the borders are narrow, the patio takes up most of the space.

Yes, I see what you mean. I can see it now, you and your fiance taking up pavers to create more planting space (or not!).

Haha I would Shirley but there seems to be some
Rather strong concrete keeping them in place
Rachel.

Hi Rachel, the words sledge, hammer, and skip spring to mind, it's good exercise for you, [or your fiance], Derek.

Ha ha Derek! A Kango drill would also work ...

We shall see. Need to try and see if we can manage what we have first. Trying to leave it alone as much as I can stand to just now.

Good thinking ... :o))

I guess its deciding how much to change depending on how long you will be able to/want to live there.

Ah, now we know you! Mother's let the cat out of the bag!
Good luck.

Great first blog! Looking forward to watching it develop. You’ve already done a lot of the hard work. And you seem to have grown a good ‘Blue Soldier’ plant too!
