Hello Guys
casper is in my very bad cat books,
today he came home with a present for me which broke my heart, my goldfinches fledgling, im gutted.
i got him to drop it but was to late, the little fledgling died in my hand, iv burried him next to my rowan tree and placed my stone hedgehog there so he doesnt get dug up again.
isnt nature cruel, just needed to share this with you, sorry if its upsetting.
rest in peace little bird x

O dear San, I do sympathise, but you cant blame Casper really, because its nature, but it is sad.

That's so upsetting for you San. Has he got a bell on?

You know he's only doing what comes naturally to a cat ... but I know exactly how you feel San ... Megan has her eye on the Pigeons as their nest is in a large Conifer behind our garden! Nothing we can do really ... just hope the birds move faster than our cats. : o ((

What a shame, but it really is the way of the world.
Our cat manages to hunt with more than one very loud, big bell. I don't know how he does it!

Sorry to here that San, I love the little birds too I'm sure the wagtail (snow boot) that used to come into the garden has been taken. Luckily my old cat Basil just sits in the garden now and the birds don't mind him as they know cant do much in the hunting line.

Hi Sanbaz. i am so sorry to hear that, but please dont blame casper. its only natural for him to hunt.give him a hug and tell him not to do it again :))

Sorry to hear about the little bird Sandra, but that's what cats do. Casper isn't bad at all - he's just being a cat. Nature isn't as wonderful as humans like to make out.

I don't like the idea of a bell on a cat's colar. How would you like a bell ringing in your ears every time you moved your head. It must drive them crazy :(((
Best to let nature take it's course. It might be cruel but that's how it was created. It isn't out place to change it.

What a shame, Casper is just following his instincts.

Very sad San but I totally agree with Hywel.

Och, that's terrible San, but there's still time for another brood, they usually have two broods a year. We adopted a Minister's cat, which he and his wife brought on the Sunday night. We let her out on Monday morning, and she raced back into the house with the very first swallow to arrive back for the spring! So that left one lonely swallow going berserk looking for its mate, it was terrible! But as everyone is saying, it's nature, 'red in tooth and claw' as the saying goes-( I think?).

Oh San, that is just so awful for you !I love our cats but hate what they do sometimes. Fortunately our two don't go out till about 9. 30am, then they are ready to come in and stay in by 3ish which at least gives the birds a chance to feed in relative safety at either end of the day. Never had cats before that are happy to do this, and, of course, it doesn't stop them catching things in between ! :(

Oh, so sorry to hear about the fledgling.

thankyou all for your comments and i know your all right, he did get a cuddle and sked not to do it again. like he will listen. casper doesnt wear a collar, i have bourght 4 in all and last no more than two days and he comes home with them taken off, he just wont wear one and also i agree with hywel, i wouldnt want a bell hanging round my next, he is chipped so no problem if he ever goes missing.
libet the cat must have been fast to catch a swallow, i once watched a video on youtube of a swallow whos mate had been hit by a car and it flew down and tried to get its mate to recover, also made sounds of distress and crying over its mate, it was very upsetting to watch, so they morn just as we do.
iv always tried to wait before letting casper out around meal times, not to early just to give the birds chance to feed and the same at tea time, but cant be sure can you.
anyway again thanx and i feel alot better today and the fledgling had a proper burial in my garden, it does make you wonder how many end up this way knowing how many cats we all have, doesnt bare thinking about really, also i saw one of the goldfinches on the feeder this morning so maybe they have another baby as it was alone.
my god its like the great floods here, better make my ark quick lol, pouring down and very windy :o(

I am lucky in as much as my cat doesn't kill birds very often, but if ever she does get one it always seems to be one of the rarer ones such as a wren or great tit or something, never sparrows etc. Are these less careful than the sparrows do you think ?

Whatever it is though, it's always a sorry sight isn't it ?

I havn't a cat but when the heron takes a fish too big to fly with and just leaves it .... I know what you mean.....

23 May, 2011

Sorry Sandra, i know its anoying but nothing we can do about it like everyone says its nature, he should slow down when he's about 7-8 yrs, Smokey & Bandit both did, and now i've got it all to come again with these two, up to yet they still have'nt caught any.

23 May, 2011

thanx cristina im fine ;o)
marie im not sure why its the rarer birds, sparrows are quick and flighty, i think in the fledgling goldfinches case it wasnt quick enough taking off the ground.
oh dear Pam thats sad to and not even eaten for food and left :o(
thanx carol i know your right, even if we tell them , they just dont understand and nature at the end of the day, hope your two are doing well :o)

Thats cat for you. The strangest thing that one of my cats brought in was a bat, one also tried to bring home a pigeon but couldn't get it through the cat flap!.
Unfortunately I get regular 'presents' butI was proper done when TC got the young robin that had joined me for several days whilst I put in my bedding plants.

It's sad Sand, but like everyone says, nature can also be cruel. I've not got a cat, but have to be careful with Mali the pup. We've taught her not to bark and chase the birds in the garden, but Son-in-law bought hubby new birdfeeder for his birthday, which is a tallish obelisk one. it is attracting the bigger nosier birds, namely magpies, (which we've not seen many of lately), but they are more daring than the little birds, and they come onto the garden and try to pinch Mali's treats. One big fat one came onto the garden and pinched her piece of hide, then took off with this huge piece in its beak (looked too big and heavy for it to carry) and then of course, I had a deranged puppy barking and leaping all over the garden trying to catch it. So basically, no matter how careful we are, these things will happen as they're out of our control.

sorry about the robin Kfunster, i rescued a baby robin last year and luckerly it survived to tell the tale. i must admit it made me laugh thinking of your cat trying to get an over sized bird through the cat flap lol :o)
poor Mali, isnt anything sacred lol, but your right its out of our control, nature linda :o)
