I came across this nursery. Its catalogue lists Black plant labels and silver pen. They reckon it lasts a long time. Labelling has been the subject of a blog on here recently but I have not found it yet. http://www.cotonmanor.com/index.php?page=1
In the summer I was lucky enough to pick up some lovely green slate labels which I plan to inscribe with the names of my Heucheras. Scratched on they should last forever.

I used pencil on some of my potatoes pushing the label down in the pot to protect the name but it still disappeared.

I have a method that will last at least ten years but not very practical for the odd one.I store up the names of things new or needing new until I have about fifty names (there are of course temporary ones left on the plants)i sit down on a wet horrible evening with a pot of black acrylic ink and a pen and write the names on White labels leave them for several hours to dry.then with small paint brush, rejects in my case from my painting coat the printed side with yacht varnish and allow to dry.this method came about from painting pictures on Aluminium in the garden and it lasts a very long time .on just one or two occasion have found the label perish and break.
Totally different some of my shrubs have copper engraved ones that are ancient and if you rub them with your finger you can read with ease.
Wilkinsons had the copper ones in the spring of this year but they did not stay there long

Yes, I saw the copper ones in Wilkinsons earlier this year and am kicking myself for not buying some. Fingers crossed, they will stock them again.

I have a problem with labelling Scotsgran, and I have found that pencil is the best now.
