Digitalis

I sowed a packet of Digitalis about 12 years ago and I have had them ever since. They are usually treated as hardy annuals but I find increasinly they are becoming evergreen perennials in my garden. They also self sow seed everywhere so I am never short of a few to give away and many end up in the compost bin as extra to requirements. The colour range is terrific, I have pure white ones which are nearly 6’ high and some pink ones which are well over 2mts. There is apricot, pale and dark pink and pale and darker purple shades. They stand up to the wind and rain and they are no problem to look after. This year for the first time i noticed a white one with spotty throat with upward pointing flowers. I thought it must be unusual but in the garden centre yesterday i spotted the seeds of just such a plant. New this year from Thomson and Morgan. I dk how i have managed to acquire such a plant but maybe it is all down to the bees we have around the garden. The last one is my favourite. Last year I read that if you grow digitalis under your apple trees the harvested apples will keep longer. I dk if that is true but I planted some anyway. Enjoy.

My OH favourites,

Some of them have quite big clumps of foliage at the bottom of the stem so I assume they get bigger as they age SK. I see he has good taste Yorkshire. When asked which are my favourite flowers I say heuchera, but to be honest its like being asked do you have a favourite amongst your children. i always thought the answer to that was 'the one who needs me most at that time'. With the flowers I suppose it is whichever is putting on the best show at any given time.

These are beautiful, I have lots that have self seeded in my garden but they are all the native purple one, I did plant a yellow one a while ago and I'm sure I had a white one, perhaps if I sow some new seeds I will get more colours??

I think if you buy seeds to give a specific colour you will probably get what is on the packet but if you save and sow your own there is no way of knowing what you will end up with. It depends on which bees visit which flowers.

Ok, thanks scotsgran I shall try the seeds. I think the purple bee is very busy round here!
