Falkland Palace Garden.

To celebrate my birthday we took a trip up to Falkland Palace. Last year a fellow member, Pixi, visited with her daughter and shared their day out with us, in a blog. If you want to know more about the property then visit either of the following links.

This is one view from the grounds.
Because the weather was overcast and looked as if it might be very wet very soon we started in the garden.
First the conservatory. We were amazed to see this ten foot tall geranium laden with bright red flowers.
and these colourful Clivia
Outside the beds of hyacinth perfumed the whole garden.
The taller wall hides the “real” royal tennis court. This is believed to be the first tennis court in the UK. Servants would serve the first ball because the royal participants found it difficult to pick up balls because of their voluminous clothes. Mary Queen of Scots loved the game and shocked people by wearing britches to enable her to move quickly. Along one side of the paved court is a long gallery. The swallows nest in there. They are not normally expected back in Falkland until June but already a fair number of them are swooping around.
Outside again and this spectacular tree with peeling bark and co-ordinating under planting in a large island bed caught our attention.
I have tried to show this peeling bark
My last photo shows this lovely blue scilla misch. tucked in at the foot of a large tree.

Yes, those are Scilla leaves, Mouldy, they have very pretty blooms don't they?
I have never seen such a huge geranium before, is it a climber? What is it called?

Very interesting blog and great photos, that enormous geranium is amazing!

I only have a limited space for planting, Xela, so have to guard against being overzealous in my ambitions. Lol.

Thanks all for your comments. Andy Murray would not recognise the game as he plays it TT but the scoring and terms eg, 'love' were in use then. There was no name on the geranium Xela. Its not a climber in as such as a climber would hold itself up and this has obviously been trained and supported as it grew. The head gardener is a Spanish lady so maybe she has devised this method of growing geraniums. Yes Mouldy those are the leaves as Xela says. Once the flowers go over the leaves will disappear and come again next year.

Please you both had a lovely day out Sheila. I remember Pixi's blog too.
That geranium certainly is impressive!
I like your shot of the island bed with the castle to the rear - very postcard like! Do you lunch there?

I thought the tree was an Acer Griseum with that lovely peeling bark.

Lovely blog. By the way, does anybody know what happened to Pixi? Haven't seen anything from her for ages.

Great blog, it looks a grand place to visit, that geranium is amazing, your photo's are lovely and thankyou for adding a bit about the history....
Pixi hasn't been on for months but her account is still open, I checked it out only a couple of days ago...

She was spending less time on here after her dad died and then something happened between a couple of members and she didn't come back on.
Such a shame, she was always cheery and lots to say.

Grandmage those are the Lomond Hills in the background. Falkland is a lovely old town. There was a lot of swallows but they go too fast for me to get a good shot of them. Mouldy I DK who said 2 swallows etc but according to Wikipedia one swallow etc. was a quote from Aristotle. Paul and Louisa thank you for the ID of the Acer Griseum. It was very beautiful in the sun. It came out after we went back to the car to get our rain capes. We had a lovely day out Scottish. They do have a tearoom but there was loads of eating places in the area so we had something to eat before we went in. Pixi has been very busy with work. Thank you Steragram and Linclass. There is lots to do at the Palace. If you want you can bring a picnic. Tables are provided down in the orchard area. There are guided tours of the castle itself. There is a tearoom, Plant sales area and gift shop.

What a beautiful place! Falkland Palace is now definitely on my list of "must-see" places. Isn't that geranium fantastic?

If you are a member of the NT entry is free Mel. We often visit places down south with our NTS (Scottish version of NT card and can also visit Welsh and Irish venues). Falkland Palace is still privately owned but cared for by the NTS. Town Car Parking was free too which I find helpful.

Free parking is always good news! I fancy seeing the wheel, as well - or is that somewhere else?!
7 May, 2013
I know, Scotsgran - that's Falkirk!!!
7 May, 2013
Yes Mel 'The Wheel' is in Falkirk and well worth a visit. The views from the boat, as you sail through the air, climbing from one level to the next, are spectacular.

It looks amazing in the pictures I've seen.

Hopefully you will get there soon.

I have added a photo of the geranium taken in August to my photos if you would like to see how it developed. This is a great place to take children. My grandkids 5 and 7 had a lovely time in the Palace doing the quiz sheets. They loved everything about the place.

Good to see the geranium as it developed. It's hard to believe one could grow that large!
