Daphnes

I bought one Daphne from Macplants, one I was given as a gift from Bjs and three I have succeeded in growing from seed.
The D. retusa has been in a sink since I bought it at least seven years ago. It will only grow to about 12" but it is a very slow grower. It took two or three years before it flowered and the nursery thought it would be happier in the ground but before I could move it, it started flowering. I will leave it where it is for the foreseeable future.

We were visiting Bjs, his wife and Jamie when he gave me this. It must have been two years ago. It did not have a label so I am hoping you can ID it for me Bjs. I have taken four photos. The buds are a lovely dark shade and when it opened it has flowers the colour shown in the last photo but a bit darker. It is not as rosy pink as in the third photo. It has been growing outside since I got it.

The next three photos, taken in April, show my seedling daphnes . I think I will need to repot them soon so any advice welcome. I have tried growing daphnes from seed in the past without success and am very happy to see all of these lovely scented plants flourishing. It may be a few years before they reach flowering size but I am sure it will be worth the wait. There is great satisfaction in seeing a seed become a plant.

some lovely daphnes there.
are there any roots out the bottom of the seedlings. if not then I wouldn't pot them on yet.

Cottagekaren I just love to see what the seeds produce. Waiting for the flowers gives me a big incentive to keep gardening. Sbg I will check and take your advice on potting on. The plants have very different shapes but the scent is definitely the big bonus in growing daphnes.

Lovely plants, Scotsgran, and the scent is indeed lovely. They were a favourite of my grandmother’s.

Daphnes are nice for early flowering and they have a lovely scent. I've never been able to grow them so I wish you good luck :)
