2019 has started well

When it is such a mixed bag of weather it is grand to see plenty of colour in the garden. I still have other snowdrops to come but they are not out properly yet. My best do-er is the G. Spindlestone Surprise. I thought I must have been mad to pay a lot for one bulb but it is very happy where it is and has bulked up very well. My other yellow galanthus G. Wendy’s Gold has struggled to establish its first clump.

those snowdrops are beautiful. I guess the BJS part is to do with Brian who sent you them. They are stunning. I have 5 or 6 different ones but I only know the name of 3 of them. the rest have different markings but no idea what they are. I have tried looking them up but there are several that look the same.
the double white hellebore is stunning too.
lots of colour in the dark months of winter. Though the last week has been wall to wall sunshine here.

Lots of colour and beautiful snowdrops. I only have a few and they haven't spread at all over the years. Today I am going to the first of the NGS open gardens in my area which is described as Snowdrop Festival. Hope to get some pics with my very ancient camera.

Sbg you guessed correctly. Bjs is very generous to other members and fosters a love of plants with his gifts. I have visited his garden and it is an inspiration. If you show your photos of your snowdrops someone might help ID them for you. Differences can be hard to spot unless someone in the know is able to guide you through a minute special feature. I love the Hellebores. The white one is actually yellow. I am very pleased with the Scilla which was a new addition last September.

Ginellie do not forget your purse unless you are trying hard to avoid making any purchases. We have a bright sunny day today but very cold and windy. Not good weather for taking photos. I look forward to seeing what you can share with us on your visit.

Lots of little gems in your garden at the moment and it is a shame about the cold wind that is blowing. I do love snowdrops and yet they struggle to spread in our garden. Primroses do much better here. You have some left very Iris too.

Wildrose both snowdrops and primroses do well in our garden. The wild primrose grow better than the hybrid one and the species ones seem to come and go a they please. I have planted a great many dwarf iris over the past three years but they do not always come back. I hope I will see them maybe every third year but it never works out that way. The pale lilac crocus keep on spreading too. The first one came in probably brought by a squirrel from next door. I don't really mind the wind but it is almost impossible to take photos when both me and the flowers are wafting around. I have an awful lot of tidying up to do still.

It's nice to see the snowdrops and interesting to find so many different types. You have some lovely splashes of spring colour there :)

Lovely pictures Scotsgran ! I have never took much notice of snowdrops until I started on here and didn't realise how beautiful they are. I was hoping to find lots of bulbs coming up in this new garden , but very disappointed to find that whoever did the garden previously covered all of the borders with thick sheeting and gravel. I am now trying to get the borders back to being flower borders. When I started to clear the borders, I was amazed to find spring bulbs and even plants buried under all of this !

Looking good SG.Did you go to the early bulb show and were you in any of the photos on the website?

Pcw OH was having a really bad day so I decided to stay at home. I will have to look at the photos on the website too. Hywel and Rose 1949 I used to think a snowdrop was a snowdrop but having discovered the different marks on the inner petals, the variety of leaves in different shapes and shades of green and even yellow markings it really made me look more carefully and now I enjoy all the little nuances. There are hundreds of different ones but I try to ensure I can see very conspicuous differences so that I can remember their names. Rose I tried laying fabric between my shrubs but was glad to get rid of it as it prevented me from planting bulbs to prolong the flowering seasons. I know you will win back your garden and I look forward to seeing the improvements. It gives one such a lift to see the changes over the year that I think people who do not garden miss out on the uplifting feeling you get in having plants to cheer you up or share your happy days. It is sad that you are not able to have your cats with you.

Love your photos, Scotsgran. So many lovely flowers to look at.

Lovely drifts of snowdrops. They certainly herald Spring.

Thanks Scotsgran. WE do miss our cats , but they are in a good home now. If it wasn't for the gardening, I wouldn't be coping as well worrying about my husband Rick who is just recovering from a big op.

Thank you Linda. I wish the iris would give me drifts like the snowdrops do. No matter how many I plant I always fail to achieve that goal. Eirlys I do enjoy my snowdrops. I rarely have a bad year with them but one year they hardly showed at all. I have no idea why. Rose I understand you why you see the garden as a coping mechanism. I know I would not have managed without my garden these last two years even though it has had to be neglected on occasion. There is always something appearing to give me a lift. Best wishes to you and Rick for a good recovery. I find doctors are often over optimistic in their assessment of the time needed to get back to normal after surgery. Healing physical wounds is much quicker than getting your confidence back that your body will not let you down again. Enjoy the sun if it is shining on you today.
