A little water in the garden

Looking at all your beautiful gardens with wonderful water features made me wish even more that I had some water in my garden.

Eventually I came up with a simple plan to change one small area which I look out on from the kitchen door; I see this view a lot and thought it could be improved,
This is how it looked:

I already had some rather nice plants that I wanted to be able to see better, so I dug out the alstromeria, the poppy and the old rose, moved them to another part of the garden, then cut back the other things, bought a small plastic dish for £4 and put them all in:

The dish is easy to remove to be able to clean out but in the meantime I think I have a better view from my kitchen now!

I added a few more stones ~ found in the garden and one I bought back from Harris, another from Iona years ago:

What a brilliant idea, its cheap, doesn`t take up to much room and invites you in to the rest of the garden. Clever you Sticki. :o))

many thanks everyone, just wondering about a few more pebbles, and i think a little hellbore behind the calla so there will be something there for winter?

1 Aug, 2011

i will let you know if any frogs find their way here, could do with some to eat up the slugs!

1 Aug, 2011

Instant water feature . . . brilliant! Yes, you could add a Hellebore, but it looks lovely now Sticki. And now you've inspired me - I've often wondered how to do something similar, so hope you won't mind me trying?

1 Aug, 2011

That's lovely Sticki! I know you've pined for a water feature for a long time, well done you! I think a hellebore would be lovely there! You could watch it flower in the winter, from your kitchen window! Lovely! Good blog!

Thanks Sticki - my holiday seemed MUCH more than 6 days . . . absolutely marvellous . . . friends in a cottage in deepest Devon, beach visits, walks, and supper-in-the-garden by the daughters of one friend. Then more fabulous scenery in Cornwall, near St Ives, with my family. (ooh, and prawns and scallops!!) :)))

When I've "recovered" I'll have a go at your lovely idea - thanks again.

1 Aug, 2011

1 Aug, 2011

1 Aug, 2011

Gorgeous Heuchera (haven't heard of that one)!

Typical cat!!

2 Aug, 2011

Suki only drinks from my pond! She wont touch the fresh water i put out for her! lol

2 Aug, 2011

Cat is a swear word in my house this morning ... I've been watching & listening to a juvenile Robin since Saturday ... it is no more ... thanks to Megan who brought it into the kitchen at 7am today ... no treats for her today. :o(((((

2 Aug, 2011

oh no shirley!! minty doesnt bring them in the house but she is a killer and i cant speak to her when she gets a bird!!

just checked the label sheila, it is blackberry jam ~ thought it was a nice name and of course it came from woburn so its doubly nice, really ought to be a pine tree from there tho!!

arent they funny pixi ~ i cant work out why it is, i thought it was fresh from the tap but the bird bowls arent fresh every day! must be that she likes cool water???

2 Aug, 2011

I blame myself, Sticki, as I'd left the back door open at 6.45am. It was hot & humid even then! Thank goodness there is no cat-flap . . . . . . . . .

2 Aug, 2011

no cat flap here either! just a demanding cat ~ oh and one silly owner who does everything for her!!! she brought a shrew yesterday ~ not eaten ~ just dead!!

2 Aug, 2011

I've found a whole load of the tiniest feathers on the lawn ... they have a faint tinge of reddy-orange on the ends so I'm now calling her 'Megan the Murderer!" . . . . . . .

2 Aug, 2011

Oh no Shirley! I'd die if Suki brought a bird in..she sits and watches them at the birdtable but never seen her going for one..or the fish thank goodness!
Suppose its natural though..just dont want to see it! :)

2 Aug, 2011

The trouble is though, Pixi, she can be such a charmer at times! Has the most wonderful purr . . . . . .

2 Aug, 2011

Great idea and its worked out really well! :-)

5 Aug, 2011

thanks red.

Its amazing how much difference the smallest amount of water makes. I noticed a black plastic gravel tray the other day that had been blown into a flower bed (I am very bad at clearing up after myself) and filled with rain water, and the reflections were lovely even though the tray was lopsided and in quite the wrong place. I do yearn for a proper pond. Just making do with the bird bath for now. Your new little bed with pool is a great improvement to your view from the kitchen - enjoy!

6 Aug, 2011

thanks steragram, i was watching the raindrops in it today ~ was lovely.

6 Aug, 2011

7 Aug, 2011
