the legend was a carthorse’s heart gave out half way up the hill pulling its heavy load so they named it heartbreak hill..

thank you terra and oliveoil, the house was amazing oliveoil but the windows before double glazing were horrible and the wind used to howl through the gaps and talk about cold in the winter the flannels in the bathroom used to freeze ridged.. still it's funny now looking back... ;-)

Hi Surreylad, although I'm only 10 miles down the road I'm guilty of not visiting things on my doorstep :o( Mostly we just drive through the Great Park en route elsewhere, but still a lovely sight. We used to walk around the lake when our children were small and now my son does the same with his children. The Valley Gardens will be fabulous soon with all the Azaleas and Rhododendrons, maybe you'll post some more pics then?
Is the house within the Park, it looks rather familiar?

Hi Lily2,yes the house is on smiths lawn No1 by the polo fields, one of my favourite places this time of year is the devils punch bowl full of rhododendrons/Magnolia's and azalea's.. i'll post some more soon. :-)

Surreylad, tha'ts how my house is now, if we don't have the heater on in the bathroom in winter it freezes over permanently. We do not have double glazing and we do not have central heating. We are hardy creatures. lol. It costs a fortune in gas for the portable heater in the bathroom and it is on a North/east facing aspect. So the very coldest in there after November, you have to be quick, no hanging around I can tell you.:O)) On the upside there is never a queue forming. lol.

Lol i remember getting out of the bath on the cold stone floors in winter you didn't hang about that's for sure, you must be hardy with the winter we just had.. :-)

Lol Surreylad, how lovely to ride a horse in a park wonderful, of course you would be able to still do it once done never forgotten how to ride.

hi bloomer, sorry about the delay in replying i didn't see the post, the man on the horse is George III on top of snow hill looking down the long walk to Windsor castle. there is a rumour about this statue that the sculptor i think Sir Richard Westmacott hung himself on the statue when he realised he'd forgot to put the stirrups on. but that's a rumour something i heard as a kid in the park so not sure how true it is.....
6 Apr, 2011
Thank you,Surreylad, that is interesting.Fancy that! That was an odd thing for the sculptor to do..if it is true..Oh,well,stranger things have happened ! Lol.

Lol ..

just out of curiosity,I googled the Sculptor,Surrey lad,and both him and his father, were both sculptors..I had never heard of him before, but they have quite a history, and did some famous ones, all around London..there is no mention of either of them, committing suicide..I don't know much about this kind of history...just nosey!.and it intrigued me to see if it was true..:o)
7 Apr, 2011
Thanks Bloomer, i only know of him because of the rumour i didn't know about the history, i'll have to google it :-)
7 Apr, 2011
Lots of info about them both,Surreylad..and sorry if I spoilt a childhood memory..Lol.
7 Apr, 2011
Lol that's ok, we all thought it was a bit far fetched anyway. :-)

FANTASTIC S - lad. I was taken here as a child . . . we lived in Ealing, but my Ma had a thing about Virginia Water and the devil's punch bowl with all its rhodos. My biggest thrill in Windsor Great Park was seeing Sir Hugh Casson sitting sketching!!
Thank you, thank you!
27 Apr, 2011
Thank you Sheilabub, yes i still like to take my kids round the devils punch bowl, wow Sir Hugh Casson i met a few people at the polo one year like Ted Rogers he had his own team he was nice.

Hi Surrey lad. Nice blog and one which i can relate too as i have walked nearly every inch of every photo over a period of years. We visit the grounds quite often especially in autumn when its quieter and all the colours are changing on the trees. We moved a few miles further away last year but we still take time out to visit the gardens occassionaly.

Hi Tony, yes i love the autumn in the park too the colours are fantastic.. it's nice to know that you still go there even though you've moved away, i'm not that far from it now only 2-3 miles....
