Don't forget the water

As well as putting out food for the birds, don’t forget the water. I empty the water dish every night because by the morning it’s solid block of ice. The first thing I do in the morning is to fill it with warm water and very soon the little ones are seen drinking.
The Blue tit in this picture has been with me for over three months and has a slightly deformed beak, upper and lower mandables are narrow and crossed over each other, but this dosent seem to be a hinderence to its feeding. In actual fact it helps the bird to get into the suet balls better. These pictures were taken a couple of minuits ago and my wife is clicking away as I write this.

Lovely blog and photos, i empty my birdbath at night and then refill with hot water as it soon goes cold then i do it a few time aday as it does'nt take long for it to freeze back up again.

I have been told that it is a scientific fact that hot/warm water freezes faster than cold water. Something about the molecules being farther apart or closer together, so we always replace the ice with cold water.
Sometimes fact is stranger ......etc.

I agree with Mad cold water not warm or hot as it freezes much faster... can't remember the whys and wherefores but it made sense at the time.
This is the advise from the RSPB Scotland http://www.edinburghguide.com/forums/otherandofftopic/general/4773
Feed, feed and feed some more seems to be the rule

tanny, I'm sorry I didn't say what lovely photos your's are. Those birds are so beautiful. Was the first one a Redcap? Really 1st class photos.

"Brrrrrrrrr", aint it cold. I also heard about the hot water freezing quicker than cold, but my birds love the hot water and when I see an icy film starting to form on the surface I go and change it for warm water again.
One of my Blackbirds had a wonderful bath today, gave me the shivers watching it.
The first bird picture is of the female Blackcap Warbler and I also call it the Redcap.
My wife and I have the same cameras, they are called the FinePix S5600 by Fujifilm with a 10x Optical zoom, and thats about all I can tell you because we aint no photographers, all we do is point it at the birds and either use zoom or the macro and click away. We sit at our living-room window, one on either side and take the pictures of the birds that come to feed right in front of us. This is better than any bird hide I've been in, what with the heater on and a regular cupp-a tea at hand. From the window to the wall is twenty two feet and this is the area we have for taking the pictures.

Sound advice all round I should say.Fantastic photos as ever Tanny.Should imagine your wife and yourself spend hours at that window,as do we when not working ! Roll on retirement !
Our pond has benn frozen over for about 3 weeks now but we defrost pockets every day for the bird...do this 3or 4 times depending on temp.Water dish similar...its as vital as food !

Your photos are fantastic.
Interesting explanation about the blue tit.
