My Greenhouse in January.

The heat is on for the start of another season.

There is not really a lot that can be done at this time simply because, if I start too early, I have plants waiting around for a long time waiting to be planted out.

Things such as Onion and Shallot seeds which need a long growing season and are affected by day length can be sown now.

I often sow biennials that some would say should be sown in the autumn in a coldframe, or cool greenhouse at this time.

I find this saves me looking after plants during the winter, and the fact that germination is quicker on a hot bed, the plants soon catch up to their autumn sown counterparts.

The other thing I like to get going is my Chrysathemums as I need them to be producing basal growth that will be used as cuttings next month.

Depends how you define " self suffiency" but it would be fair to say I don't do so bad!

Some months we don't need to buy any veg,but on other months we have to buy out of season veg.

I usually can pick something fresh for around ten months of the year and use surplus veg that has been frozen for the rest of the year.

Lovely to see the new growth sprouting.
