Where have all our butterflies gone ? :o(

New TV series on how to transform back gardens into wildlife havens !*

I’ve already mentioned this new BBC 1 television series in several places on GoY, hoping everyone interested gets to see the programmes.

Starts Wednesday 19th November 2008. BBC 1. ~ 8.30 – 9.00 p.m.

The presenters are Chris Beardshaw, Ellie Harrison and Nick Knowles.
Apparently the first show is from Crayford in Kent, England.

Let’s hope this is an interesting, informative, balanced and useful series. I would be pleased to read comments and feedback. :o)

I guess overseas GoY members won’t see these shows, but we’ll do our best with descriptions and comments to keep you involved too. :o)

Television – Friday 20th February 2009. –
BBC 2. 8.00pm – 8.50 pm

Natural World Exploring ways to farm without fossil fuels.

I am going to name drop now :) - I met Nick Knowles several years ago when he came and did a day-long feature at the hospital where I worked. He was charming and had everyone in the office dewy-eyed!! The programme looks interesting - hope they include budget ideas, too!

I can't compete with that.
I didn't even give Bill Oddie
a kiss on the beard. Lol :o)

18 Nov, 2008

~years ago Caz entered an art competition at school and part of the prize was a tour round London and then a boat ride down the Thames where we had lunch . Tony Hart was on board drawing and talking to the kids.He gave two large black and white cartoons to Caz which she has had framed up ~he was really nice!

18 Nov, 2008

Those cartoons could be worth quite a lot of money :o)
Are they pictures of people, or of the river scene. ?

18 Nov, 2008

Wow Tony Hart! i loved that Programme Arlene & 4 Caz 2 be given2 Drawings by the man Himself how Fantastic :) & i cant belive u didnt Kiss Little Bill TT :D lol

I've met Chris Beardshaw - very nce and helpful bloke. I won't name drop on the other gardening personalities I've met but one was on Ground Force and another is on Gardener's World

18 Nov, 2008

Yes, whenever I've seen Chris Beardshaw on shows such as the Flying Gardener, I've thought he seems very passionate about gardening, with lots of knowledge and enthusiasm, and gets on well with people. :o)

18 Nov, 2008

Chris Beardshaw Great Meeting there Andrewr :)How lucky is that :O & 2others un-named Fantastic :) Well Done U Andrewr :)

18 Nov, 2008

It is not going to be screened in Scotland on BBC 1. Will catch up with it on sky. Also bbc iplayer. I have had Carole Baxter to my garden every year. Do not know if you will know her. Beechgrove garden, she is the presenter and gardner on it. I think it only is screened in Scotland.
Have met many famous people. Of to Chelsea flower show next year, so hope to meet Chris Beadshaw and Andy Sturgeon. There my favourite and of coarce Alan Thichmarch.

18 Nov, 2008

Nice to meet all those TV gardeners face to face. I didn't realise that Scotland would miss out on this series. Good thing you can watch it on Sky, or bbci. I think the Carole Baxter programmes are only seen in Scotland. A pity because that would be interesting for many UK viewers.

18 Nov, 2008

Will be tuning in thanks for the reminder.
I too have snoged JT met him at Butlins bike weekend and at Isle of Man TT. Got some realy good photos of him. Jacque.

18 Nov, 2008

Hi Gillb ~
I'll be interested to know what you think of the show.
You and JT !!!
I hope Jacque isn't jealous Lol. :o)

18 Nov, 2008

18 Nov, 2008

Im sure i would Gillb :)

18 Nov, 2008

Thanks for the reminder TT.
I fully intend to watch the program, and I hope it will be interesting.

18 Nov, 2008

Sid

I will be out tonight - hopefully will catch it on Freeview tho...?

My hob-nobbing with the celebs extends as far as....well, I've stood within 6ft of Alan Titchmarsh and within 12ft of....now what's his name.....the guy with the lisp and red hair in GF - does the allotment....well him anyway! Oh, and I know someone who claims to know Christine (of Christine's Garden).

19 Nov, 2008

I wish we got it here. It sounds like a great programme. Canadian garden shows are not particularly numerous. There used to be a great show called Canadian Gardener with David Tarrant but he has retired and as far as I know the show no longer exists. Another called "Victory Garden" is also gone off the air.
Gardening By the Yard and Gardening Diaries are not bad shows. Otherwise there seems to be fewer and fewer garden shows and more and more "improvement" shows where they show you how to rip out your yard, spend thousands of dollars and make a low maintenance "living space".

19 Nov, 2008

I Love It Love It Love It :) So TT what did u think? :D

19 Nov, 2008

Jacque ~
I really enjoyed the programme.
I'm sure in future shows they'll cover different aspects. They can't do it all in the first one. Looking forward to more.! :o)

19 Nov, 2008

Picked up a few tips so hope I can encourage more butterflies next year. Have you checked out the web sit yet? the 360 tour of the garden is cool.

19 Nov, 2008

Yes i Checked out the Web site few days ago Gillb its great isnt it :)

19 Nov, 2008

I must say I was rather disappointed in the prog. It seemed to concentrate too much on the presenters and their machinery and problems instead of the plants and wildlife.
I enjoyed seeing the water voles. We had them in the river opposite my old cottage where I used to live.
I hope future programmes will improve and show less of machines and workmen but more plants and animals.

21 Nov, 2008

I agree, Hywel. I would also have liked to know the cost of such 'instant' planting and the actual size of the garden. Also how big the trees would ultimately grow. I hope they do a 'budget' plan in future, with perhaps smaller plants to start with. It was interesting and the finished garden looked lovely.

21 Nov, 2008

Im Just back from Browesing the "Wild About Your Garden " Home Page & think if u check out some of the Video Footage thats is own there ul learn about the Plants /Flowers Ect that Attract Bees/Butterflys Ect :)Go To Their Web Page Now2See More :)

23 Nov, 2008

Thanks for that info. Jacque. I'll check it out. :o)

I agree with Gee19 about budgets. Almost every garden show I watch, I'm thinking "What did that cost?" ~
even just a few bags of small stones. It would be nice to know the true price of some of these projects.

23 Nov, 2008

REMINDER ~ SECOND SHOW TONIGHT ~

Apparently from Bristol, but I don't think they were visiting Grenville's wonderful stumpery :o)

26 Nov, 2008

~i enjoyed last night's programme~ I thought they were very brave to have a badger sett~ but the finished design where it was right at the end of the garden bordering the wild was the obvious best solution.
The only thing that worried me was the pool with a baby who will be a toddler soon~you will need to be very vigilant to make sure that gate is locked and that there is no way through ,until the child is old enough to enjoy the advantages of the wild life it brings!

27 Nov, 2008

Yes, I very much agree with you about dangers of water near toddlers. Youngsters can drown in even the shallowest of pools.

These first two shows have both been on a large budget, with very little reference to the plants used. I guess there is more info, on the website, and it is a lot to pack into a half hour show.

I guess they will eventually get more into popular themes such attracting butterflies and birds.

I hope there will be a couple of shows where the money spent and projects undertaken are more in line with what the average gardener could afford to fork out, both in cash and in volumes of soil removed. Lol.

27 Nov, 2008

Hi

The guys at www.best4plants.co.uk supplied the plants for the Wild about your Garden series.

If you would like more information about the plants used in each show, visit: http://www.best4plants.co.uk/BBC_Wild_About_Your_Garden.aspx or email them on info@best4plants.co.uk

Kind regards

Dan

27 Nov, 2008

Hi Dan ~
Thanks for that information.
They have only a half hour slot, so I guess listing every plant would be rather time consuming.

Maybe there will be a second series of hour-long shows where the plants and their uses can be described in more detail.
Chris Beardshaw would be good at that.
Do you know where is the best place to send suggestions for a second series, please ? So many gardeners, such as those here on GoY, are trying hard to attract more butterflies, birds.etc.

Meanwhile. the web info. is useful. :o)

27 Nov, 2008

Dan ~
Which plants in your garden seem to attract the butterflies ?

27 Nov, 2008

I ll stick with it as love the wildlife aspect but this really is Groundforce gone wild.

With a budget approaching £10,000 esp if labour charges were included then any garden could be transformed with that budget.

Have BBC looked out the window ? Times are very tight for many people financially and would have thought programme would have been better by trying to show how to attract wildlife to your existing garden.

Wonderful but first prog had water voles second had badgers before BBC spent thousands on the gardens.

29 Nov, 2008

Yes, BB. I agree.
As I watch the "transformations" I am wondering about the budget. As yet, they haven't shown a programme which would easily transfer to smaller gardens with little money to spend. Let's hope for better next week. :o)

29 Nov, 2008

Oh I shall TT but we got the old chestnuts the gardener arguing with the landscaper - with respect I know that blonde lady is easy on the eye but was that more important than her knowledge of wildlife?

As far as I can see not doing much to dispel the dizzy blonde image.Give me Kate Humble any day.

Well thats the Christmas present sorted ..dream on.

29 Nov, 2008

I think it was Andrewr referred to this show as an opportunity missed. I'm inclined to agree with him....
and don't start me on the intrusive, unnecessary music....

PS.
For Christmas, there's now a new special offer ~
with every gift-wrapped Kate Humble, you get a free Bill Oddie. :o)

29 Nov, 2008

Wednesday 3rd December 2008 ~
8.30 pm - 9.30 pm.
Wild About Your Garden ~

Nick Knowles and the team face the toughest challenge to date, as they set out to attract the rare red squirrel to the McLoughlin's barren garden in Dundee.

30 Nov, 2008

Sid
Sid

well, that episode will just be nuts......

30 Nov, 2008

Maybe tempt the squirrels with some nutty Dundee cake :o)

30 Nov, 2008

Hiya

They have already talked about filming for the next series, so the feedback about the show sounds good! I'm not sure if they will get hour long slots tho. Will keep you updated!

I have put together a full plant list for each programme, which I will have uploaded ( www.best4plants.co.uk/BBC_Wild_About_Your_Garden.aspx ) by the end of this week. Hopefully we can offer you a forum discount, again I will keep you updated.

Kind regards

Dan

2 Dec, 2008

Thanks Dan ~
Please let the programme organisers know that some of us would like another series, but each of an HOUR LONG, so that there is more time for advice and information about the PLANTS. Chris Beardshaw is very talented and knowledgeable and could easily do this.

The whole show seems extremely rushed. Too much crammed into too short a time.

~ and music, please, which is milder and gentle ~
more in tune with wildlife ???
Thanks. :o)

2 Dec, 2008

I've just watched programme three.
The part at the end was nice, showing footage of the red squirrel. For the rest of the show, I would have liked more filming of the planting, with details about the shrubs chosen.

3 Dec, 2008

~ I did enjoy it~and the footage of the red squirrel was gorgeous~ but this must have been their most expensive project yet?As I said on TT's other blog~ must have cost the price of a small bank or a few branches of Woolworths!Do the householders contribute?

4 Dec, 2008

Yes, I wondered whether the home-owners pay money towards these shows. It must have cost thousands ~

However, I wouldn't object to the red squirrel charging an appearance fee because he was very much the star of the show. Lol.

4 Dec, 2008

OMG i keep 4getting its on TT :( iv missed 2 shows Now :/ i must try&Remember :)

4 Dec, 2008

Next Wednesday, I'll try to remember to remind you and everyone else here on this blog.
I've just made a note in my diary ~
Tell Jacque, WAG. Lol. :o)

4 Dec, 2008

LOL Thanx TT your a Gem XXX

4 Dec, 2008

All wk iv been waiting2watch Wild about Your Garden TT & i didnt Forget with Many thanx 2u :) All about Hedgehogs 2night& were`nt they the Cutest :) Very Very Sad about the Little 1 who didnt make it :( I thought the Garden looked Nice b4 they even started,All those Lovely Blue Bells they Dug up with that Digger i was Horrified :/ Dont they know how Wild life Friendly they are? I dont think that Brick Building fitted in2well did u TT the Pond was lovely but i think a More Wildlife Looking1 would of fitted better in the garden if id planned it that is ? LOL Oooooooooo id of loved those Chickens myself laying eggs 4 my breakfast Yummi .I still enjoyed watching it TT & i think the presenters are good @what they do I sit&giggle @some of the Comments they make:)

10 Dec, 2008

Yes, sad about the bluebells. I would have preferred a more natural-looking pond.
With the hedgehog box they made, did you think the entrance seemed too big ? They said they made it small so that foxes and badgers could not enter, but looked quite a large entrance.
I wondered if that's why the hedgehogs didn't use it.

Interesting Chris Beardshaw on the allotment about slugs, advising to maybe water in the morning and not at night. :o)

10 Dec, 2008

Yeah that was a great piece of advice TT on the water in Morning Not in eve :) I dont &never have used Slug Pellets TT , i knew what harm they can do 2 other animals once the Slugs/Snails have eaten them :(

10 Dec, 2008

A new member voiced concern about hedgehogs drowning in the pond created during last evening's show.
Treesandthings has sent the following response which I'm reprinting with permission [ Thanks :o) ]

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just watched it on the BBC i player. They showed them making the ends of the long narrow pond have slight gradients so that hedgehogs could get back out if they did fall in. Only the two long sides were steep.
Hedgehogs are good at swimming and would find this type of pond/pool fine.
Take a look at the i player as you can watch the shows like these if you've missed them. As I just have as I missed tonight's and last week's.
Loved last week's garden by the way.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Above comment submitted by Treesandthings. Thanks.

11 Dec, 2008

Generally we both like the new series. Clearly it has to be edited severely to fit into the time slot but it would be nice to see more time being given to the planning and design stages together with the choice of plants to fit into the scheme together with the reasons for the choices. We were very impressed with the garden here in Bristol with its pond and badger sett.
Chris Beardshaw is a very talented designer with a good eye for creating a garden with the 'wow factor!'

11 Dec, 2008

I noticed the Pond Had Gavel slopes 2the narrow ends of the Pond TT ,Did u see the Black Bird having a Bath In It? Seems the Birds Have taken a Right shine 2 it :)The Garden Did a Wow Factor didnt it Grenville/Alan :)X

11 Dec, 2008

Yes, Jacque, the birds seemed to like it a lot :o)

And, Grenville. Yes, I agree with your comments.
Thanks for joining in here. Interesting to know what the reaction is to the programmes.

It certainly would be nice to see the shows extended to an hour each, with more time for Chris Beardshaw to explain the designing and planting ideas.

Chris gets better and better. The half hour doesn't give time to hear all the interesting things I'm sure he would like to explain about each project.

11 Dec, 2008

I was saying 2 My Daughter Only last night the Programme isnt on long enough TT :/ it would certainly give the Presenters more time 2 explain what theyv planted ect :D Thanx AgainTT 4 reminding me :) XXX

11 Dec, 2008

I'll put a note in my diary to remind everyone on this thread for Wednesday morning to get ready to watch the next show.:o)

And Jacque ~ I'll probably send you some extra special reminder messages, like yesterday LOL

11 Dec, 2008

Lol thanx TT i really enjoyed the Pms :) lol ;) XXX

11 Dec, 2008

PLEASE NOTE ~
TONIGHT ~ THURSDAY 18TH DEC. 2008 ~
### WILD ABOUT YOUR GARDEN ###

On Thursday instead of Wednesday because the Royal Variety Performance was broadcast yesterday.

BBC 1 THIS EVENING. 8.PM ~ 8.30 pm.

Newpaper says ~
" The team help the Gibbons family in Milton Keynes attract wildlife into their back garden, which resembles a junkyard, thanks to their father, Pete. "

~ I wonder if any real gibbons will show up ?
Maybe the Goodies with Bill Oddie ~
The Funky Gibbon ? LOL.
Enjoy. :o)

18 Dec, 2008

Yyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh its on 2nite :) Thanx TT for PM & the Reminder :) Youv a Fab Memory 2 Remember the Goodies Gibbons lol I used 2love watching Them :)

18 Dec, 2008

I don't remember The Goodies all that well ~
but I have a head full of animal related facts and figures ~ dogs, birds, cats, horses, gibbons.... LOL

Jacque ~
maybe for this Thursday show I should have put the reminder up outside your house in Christmas lights. :o)

18 Dec, 2008

Lol that would of been lovely TT lol :)

18 Dec, 2008

Great Show 2nite TT :) Did u see all that Yummy Honey! :)

18 Dec, 2008

I thought tonight's show was the best programme so far.
More detail about plants and trees. Good, safe design at the end. A garden that was easy to maintain, suitable for the dogs, and very attractive to wildlife. And, yes, Jacque, yummy honey, too . LOL. :o)

18 Dec, 2008

Did u see that Sparrow Hawk TT ! I get 1 of those chase my little Birds & it stole 1of the Baby Black Bird this yr ,I love 2 see Bumbles dont u? Their so Cute & Fluffy Looking :)

18 Dec, 2008

Hi Guys, I want a bee hive now!!! Liked the programme and I'm going to shave Bonnie now to get some hair for the bee nest, lol. Saw the sparrow hawk Jacque, was surpirsed they were pleased to see it!! Lovely birds but we dont like our little birds being taken. x

18 Dec, 2008

Last summer, Sparrowhawks tried a couple of times to swoop down on Collared Doves in my back garden. On both occasions the hawks saw me at the last minute and veered off up into the sky again.

Bumble bees would be good to have around. What do you think about the likelihood of wasps using a nest area you might make for bees? I would not want wasps invading.:o(

18 Dec, 2008

~missed the programme again! will have a look on iplayer!
~I always have huge bumbles in the garden~they are lovely~have you ever watched how erratic they are~going back to where they have just been~obviously gives you the cross pollination needed~maybe they know exactly what they are doing!

18 Dec, 2008

Hi Arlene ~
Yes bumble bees are lovely in a garden.
It would be interesting to know what you think of the show.
I hope you're able to watch it. :o)

18 Dec, 2008

I got some fantastic Bumbles in My Garden This year Dawn&hope for even more this year as iv added many many more Bee&Butterfly friendly Plants&Flowers :) I want a Pergolia & Bee Hive 2 :) X

18 Dec, 2008

I've been watching these shows but felt rather overwhelmed with the huge changes made (and at what cost?). Tonights programme seemed better but I would like information regarding costs and it would have been nice to have some smaller plots included in the series. It does seem just like another 'instant gardening' programme again. Perhaps next series could be 'attracting wildlife on a budget'! Just putting bird food out, leaving logs in the garden, and having a good array of flowers, shrubs, etc. seems to do the trick anyway. Perhaps I'm just being a grump but does my licence fee go towards paying for these make-overs?

18 Dec, 2008

Your Not a Grump @ all Gee :) I think they just like 2 show what a Garden does look like after a few yrs in an instant 2 encorage People 2 do the same :)I Guess The TV Lic money does pay 4 all the Make Over but its worth it i think2 see the Wild Life enjoying what has been Instantly acchived:) Dont U think so ? Much Better than any Old Repeat lol ;)

18 Dec, 2008

When I watch these shows, I do find myself wondering whether the home-owners pay anything at all towards the garden makeover.

This was an interesting programme, but a series of shows for those with little money to spare would be good. :o)

As Jacque says, if it encourages people to make their gardens more wildlife friendly, that's a plus point :o)

18 Dec, 2008

Perhaps I would feel less grumpy if I had good TV reception!

18 Dec, 2008

Trouble is TT how many TV Shows will Cover/Host a Garden which is In The Low Penny Range? I mean like myself for instance On Low Income & Starting out with Very Few /Cheap Plants&Seeds that have come from Swaps ect, People wouldnt want2see that as its not Classy enough for the veiwers:/ Do u know what i mean TT?

18 Dec, 2008

I know exactly what you mean, Jacque but I think a programme of swaps with beginner gardeners, (perhaps within a neighbourhood) could make good TV. It could also include alternative sources of plants other than Garden Centres etc, Wilkinsons, boot fairs, stands ouside people's front gardens. I know Gardener's World do a plant swab section in one of the big flowers shows and that seems very successful. My garden contains mostly donated and gift plants. Those I buy from Centres are usually because I have been lucky enough to have been given vouchers. When I retired I was given £300 worth of garden vouchers - Bliss!

Changing the subject slightly, did you all notice the wellie with the hole in it during this last programme? Do you think the householders belonged to GoY?

18 Dec, 2008

Yes, Dawn mentioned that wellie under my recent photo of Conker and Santa. Let's hope the Gibbon family become GoY members ~ maybe they are already ~

as you say, that wellie looked a very good recruit for the wellie photos I've started adding to my Wellie Blog. LOL.

19 Dec, 2008

Sid

Ah, finally I've managed to catch this show you've all been talking about!! Thought it was quite good really - a bit phrenetic (spelling?) but I nice garden at the end and Chris Beardshaw was very interesting (and a bit of eye-candy for us girlies x-) ) My only complaint would be that the pond was not very wildlife friendly. It had no shallow shelf for birds to bath or drink or for a haples hedgehog to climb out on and the fountain I thought was too big for a wildlife pond. I'm surprised these so-called experts didn't pick up on that. Thought the bee idea was good with the pipe/flowerpots. Might try that. I've got a wooden above-ground bee-box that's never been used :-(

19 Dec, 2008

Sid ~
good points about the pond.
In the 10th Dec Show, the team built a pond with slopes, where they addressed the issues of shallow parts to allow access for wildlife.

I guess in yesterday's show there was great concern that the pond was not too user-friendly for the Gibbons' two huge Newfoundland dogs. It is a worry, though, if small mammals etc. fall in and can't get out of the water.

I'm still curious as to whether making bee boxes, and putting them around the garden could result in these being used by wasps, instead of bees. Does anyone have knowledge on that point please ?

... and yes, Chris Beardshaw is wonderful lots of ways ~
good gardening knowledge, ability to get facts across to viewers .... and a good-looking guy :o)

19 Dec, 2008

Nicks Yummi 2 Ladys ;)

19 Dec, 2008

Jacque ~
We know you like Nick. LOL :o)

19 Dec, 2008

:) lol Chris is ok 2 Sarah/TT;)

19 Dec, 2008

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned the wellie tree. No mention of where it was bought though :-(

19 Dec, 2008

Wellie tree ~
A brand new hybrid ?
Bruno and Barney could be secretly growing these in your garden...

19 Dec, 2008

I think we can pick up a few good tips but its a bit annoying when the owners of the property have a tip for a garden and then the BBC come along and make it beautiful and they dont even muck in! But personally, I think there's nothing nicer than after a hard day in the garden, at the end of the day after you've showered, going back out and admiring your hard work, aches included.

Yes, it would be good to see the home-owners doing some of the make-over. As you say, the end result of a lovely garden is more satisfying if you've played a part in the transformation. It did seem that the owners had looked after the garden well since that time.

That's true TT. Did you see the staircase balustrade that they had put around their patio!! Slightly out of place I thought - bet there were lots of members thinking look at that lovely fire wood going into the skip though!

I guess everyone has different tastes.

We dedicated gardeners try not to put anything on the skip ~ recycle, recycle, recycle. :o)

Hmmm. It was quite interesting I thought. I had a vague idea what permaculture was all about - not digging your soil, mixing different plants together, heavy reliance on green mulches. I'm still not much the wiser about how it all works....kinda left me with more questions than answers. I recon they must lose a lot of produce to pests. And they were growing onions in the woodland garden....onions need full sun, so how did that work out? I think that idea would need constant weeding too.....what did you think TT?

21 Feb, 2009

It will be good if the presenter films a follow-up series about putting the project into practice. That would prove whether the onions and other plants grow well. Maybe she is hoping the TV people will offer her that option.

I like her style of presenting. She is very clear and easy to understand without being condescending.
