VISIT TO MOTISSFONT ROSE GARDENS AND HOUSE

While sojourning (lovely word that..just had to show it off!) in the south of England, and still able to walk after visiting Dottydaisy’s Garden and Sir Whatsits Hillier’s Garden, we found ourselves on collision course with the above mentioned rose gardens, and having heard lots but never been..AND it was National Trust and we are members, we decided tomorrow would be soon enough to collapse with exhaustion, but that day we would live to the max!!
The approach to the house was very pretty, an old bridge, a clear stream (chalk stream?), a sort of Japanesey type bridge and an old old oak (I think! Dont scream at me, you will see why I didnt look closely at the leaves!!)
Just to give you a sense of proportion
The we went around the house…okay but not the main event…
A nice avenue of pleached limes (?) with matching urns..
Then we went on a route march to the rose gardens (if I had known it was the other end of the estate, we might not have gone!)
The entrance with more modern roses and pillars with both rose and clematis
Rose Grahame Thomas
Rose Geoff Hamilton
Rose Pillars
Now I will let you wallow in roses and clematis and mountainous, giganteous borders…and the odd flower or two…
Rose Mrs Oakley Fisher
Well, after driving nearly 250 miles (so I got lost once!) and walking about 10 miles (5 miles around DD’s garden..kept missing stuff) if you arent exhausted for us, I wash my hands of you all!!!
PS Googled Rose Mrs Oakley Fisher as I hadnt heard of it before. Its a 1920’s single Hybrid Tea only about 2ft x 2ft and a similar colour to Lady Hillingdon..maybe just a tad more orange..but continuous flowering and bees and insects like it..must be a winner for the front of the border! Peter Beales roses.

Thanks Cristina..a bit far for you to visit I guess and the best time is in June as a lot of the roses are summer flowering and not repeaters, many old english and french varieties. I found the house a little disappointing and wouldnt visit just for that.

Tet the tree is just magnificent, you captured the scene perfectly, borders to die for, you write a good blog, and the photos are beautifully clear........I ought to find somewhere to put that rose my maiden name was Oakley!! we have Hardy and Gertrude after Peters Mum, so only fair? thanks Tet enjoyed it.....you must have been bushed when you got home.

Oh I really think you should get this rose..its a really pretty one and a single, which is a bit different! ..wonder if you are related to Mrs Oakley Fisher..her christian name cannot surely be Oakley..maybe originally double barrelled?
Not sure if the colour matches your Zulu lily?
Im glad you enjoyed the blog..We love going off for a couple of days, and often play back the pictures on the computer to relive a certain holiday or break..especially in the winter when its dull and we get bored.
I must admit my feet and knees were pretty sore, but nowhere near what it was like when we went to Stowe and walked for over 5 hours and did Waddesdon Manor the day previous. I couldnt walk for 3 days after that!! But I keep doing it as I do love walking around gardens and estates, if you dont use it, you lose it! And I keep taking the pills...lol!

Thanks very much for this wonderful tour, Tet . . . sorry you were exhausted, but it was obviously worth it. Lovely of you to share it with us!

So you've been sojourning eh? I really enjoyed scrolling through this blog, Tet, and am ashamed to say Michael & I have never been there, even though it's only a County away from us! I love the penultimate photo with those beautiful Roses. Hope your aches & pains have lessened now?

I know its a long time ago Shirleyt, but when faced with another nice garden, a bit like birthing pains, my aches and pains disappear lol

I have to agree with you ... : o ))

Ha ha just caught up! That second pic, bridge and weeping willow, makes me drool. Brilliant photo! Loved all of them , but cruel to show me roses...have I mentioned my addiction? Just had David Austin Handbook of Roses through the post, lovely surprise. Must be cos I bought a bare root Mortimer Sackler from them beginning of year. WARNING!!!! Don't look at it...too much pleasure is bad for you. Having said that...do get one it's beautiful, but don't say I didn't warn you:-))

Hey, who needs warning BA??? Not I. I have the RHS Encyclopedia of Roses and still find others not in there..
What I would really like BA is a walled garden at the bottom beyond the Clematis Grandi, and have all those lovely french roses, many of which only flower once a year, plus loads more clematis and jasmine and some Chinese Virginia creeper (for autumn) underplanted with phlox and carnations and geraniums...and anything else oh yes! honeysuckles..that smell nice...sweet peas..oh bliss!!
22 Jul, 2011
Can I share it with you?:-) I've been googling to find a way to David Austins by public transport as I'm not really that far away. It involves 2 buses and a train....then a taxi. Wonder how much time I'll have there lol. Think it would be too much for OH and don't like to leave him too long, but if I get there I'm taking my camera....and card lol:-)
22 Jul, 2011
Ba, is there a GC nearby which organises outings to Horticultural places? We have a well known one close to us, does a 'Garden Club' card, and advertises trips. Worth investigating perhaps? . . . . .
22 Jul, 2011
If I had such a walled garden BA, it would be open house to you and all the Goyers (Ill paint the step edges white).
I think I would practically live there!!
22 Jul, 2011
Hi Shirley, unfortunately our local Country Gardens? I think that's what it's called, doesn't do outings, in fact I have a feeling it won't be here for very much longer...not looking so well looked after. I took a taxi there a week or so ago on a Sunday with OH. What a waste of time...I bought nothing!...unheard of lol! Taxi fare wasted:-(
Thanks for that Tet, if I had a billion pounds...I would share it with you lol:-))
23 Jul, 2011
Funny thing about money isnt it BA...I struck some cuttings of my honeysuckle Grahame Thomas and they are growing well...got more pleasure from that than I did when buying the plant! I have a feeling my youth spent in making do never really left me!!
23 Jul, 2011
I put a tip from a physocarpus diablo I'd cut a branch off, stuck it in the ground with a jam jar on top...two weeks later, looking good...exciting:-) My polygonium tutti frutti is JUST coming into flower. I bought plugs early in the year, can't help feeling that by the time they're looking good, we'll be ready for first frost:-(
I will have some ammi majus seed going begging if you fancy any? Anyone else for that matter too. I've not deadheaded them so lots of seed heads. I'll put a question on re harvesting them. They're the ones I thought were dried wood lice:-)
24 Jul, 2011
That sounds brilliant BA, I had the diablo back a while, just got too big despite hacking it back, so it had to go.
However, I wouldnt mind some Ladys Lace..never grown it but it does look pretty. Does it seed itself?
Only dear BA, do make sure its not woodlice..I already have thousands....
24 Jul, 2011
I'm told it seeds itself Tet, but I started them off indoors in cells. Probably best to scatter where wanted, and sew some indoors to make sure:-)
