HOLIDAY IN SHROPSHIRE/CHESHIRE - Part 1

We had a pretty good week last week, managed to avoid the showers. Sunday was dry when we visited Ness Botanical Gardens on the Wirral (recommended by our good friend Whistonlass) and we were so glad we went, it was gorgeous!

The stipa gig. were gorgeous, just wish my garden were big enough to show one to advantage!

The borders were magnificent and during the week we saw masses of butterflies.
There was a section of “single colour” beds; red, pink, blue..this was the black bed and the water bed.

I fell in love with this crocosmia, vibrant and yet soft colouring.

All in all well worth the effort of going so far north from our base just north of Shrewsbury!

Great blog Tetrarch. If I am ever in the Wirral, I am going to Ness gardens! I love that black bed. Just earlier this year I was saying to Spritz it would be great to have a bed just for black plants...against my white house wall, they would look great! All your photos are great, I love the one with the butterfly on the Dahlia! I have one Stipa Gig. in my front garden. It has been spectacular this year. Yesterday I picked a few of the seed heads for a vase, but I want to leave the rest and see how they look over the winter months. Hopefully they won't collapse on me!

Hi Tet, I love that black bed too but dont always like black plants! Maybe they need to be together like this rather than singles in a border? Those borders are gorgeous, I love huge clumps of one type of flower they look so dramatic.

I love that black bed and being surrounded by that light gravel shows it off to its best advantage.
Looks as if you had a good trip, plenty to see and inspire you.

Thanks Nariz!
Bloomer the crocosmia was labelled Carmine Brilliant but the colour wasnt as vivid as pictures I have seen. Maybe the soil had an affect on it? Dont know if that can happen.
Lulu, it was a really stunning waterbed..the plants were so architectural. Which I know is a style close to your heart!

Andrew, Pam - dont miss the chance if you get it!

Val, you will need a big pump and it will have to fall from the Garage roof lol! Brian was/is an engineer.....

Karen, I saw go for it. It would have looked so much better if the brick walls had been white. The sad part is the Aeoniums (? spelling). Its a microclimate at Ness. However, you could sink them in pots for the summer and overwinter in a warmer place.

Meadowland, Sticki..the water reminded me somewhat of the lilypond at Monet's House. And just as charming and peaceful in its own way.

Thks very much Motinot glad you enjoyed.

Grandmage, Im like you, prefer to see a black bed of colour rather than odd ones here and there..trouble is I only have 3 beds, blue/purple/white, shades of pink, and my peaches & cream bed.Oh and my reds/yellows/oranges around the circle. Can't sacrifice a one.

Oh Karen, did you post a pic of your Stipa? Im green with envy..however my Calmagrotis are doing well!

Thks Scottish, Stroller. If ever you are able, do go!

So pleased you enjoyed your holiday Tet and no wonder with places like this to visit. Was the weather kind?:-)

Thks Sandra I did indeed!
Hi BA me ole love..the weather was exceptionally kind..it only rained when we were indoors at a stately home, or once we got home. It drizzled a little in Shrewsbury, but a visit to a few charity shops took care of that lol!
If you keep an eye out Im sure you can get a "day out" coach trip from your neck of the woods..providing you have enough time after digging up half your garden lol!

What a coincidence, Gardeners Question Time (Radio 4) came from Ness gardens this week. Very interesting, told the story of Ness and its founder. You May hear it on 'Listen Again' Tet:-)

Got the teeshirt BA (and the book!) but yes, what a coincidence. You must listen all and if you cant find it, BA will tell you how...Radio 4! Very highbrow of you BA (big grin)...and big hugs lol!
