Elan Dam - How wet can it get?

After almost four months of continuous rain, even those of us who live in Mid Wales had seen enough of water. However, on Monday 8th February 2016, my partner and I drove to the Elan Valley to photograph the effects of the recent strong winds and came away thinking that this was by far the worst (or best, if you’re into photography) weather we had seen in these parts.
‘A picture (hopefully) paints a thousand words’ so enjoy the read!

The familiar landscape was lost behind a wet fog…

…but lifted enough to allow a quick glimpse of the Caban Coch Dam in the distance

Rather than driving straight to the Elan Visitor Centre, we drove up to the top of the dam. We parked and crossed the road, almost being blown over by the gale force wind.

The reservoir above the dam looked like a stormy sea…

…and below us was the most amazing sight; water pouring over the top of the dam then up into the air!

We drove back along a road running with water…

…and parked outside the Visitor Centre. Walking round to the main entrance…

…I managed to take some photographs whilst, at the same time, battling against the wind

The visit was well worth the effort…especially as we were able to enjoy the view from inside the restaurant…

…before driving home again.

The End

Spectacular......if not a little scary being up there in all that wind and fog!

Wow! It does look forbidding.

I remember a farmer sending us on a "short cut" around this area when the dam was being created. It was something like Dr Who territory then and we got thoroughly lost on "roads" used only by large machinery.
It didn't help that on the few fences we saw, red kites were perched looking suspiciously like something from Jurassic Park.
At least the weather was good that day!

It looks very dramatic in your photographs, only ever seen it in midsummer, thankyou for braving the elements and then sharing with us....

Spectacular was the work I was thinking of too Paul. Doesn't look like the sort of day for a nice gentle country ramble! Its good to see things sometimes when the weather's wild even if you aren't tempted by the picnic tables...
