Blooming Marvellous Competition

Good news my garden has made it into the final 10 of the ‘Portsmouth Evening News Blooming Marvellous’ competition.

This now means that Brian kidd (Horticultural radio presenter and columnist) will be coming for a personal visit next Tuesday to have a look around and do the judging as to who goes through to the final three. With him will be the news reporters to ask a few questions and take some pics.

So far all I have had to do is send in a photo (I sent 5 and a little bit of blurb). I dont excpect to win but being in the final 10 is great. Hopefully the pics they take might even make it into the paper (fingers crossed).

Lets hope I can talk him into the fact that the weeds in the lawn are supposed to be there and its a fashion statement.

I shall let you know how it goes.

Thanks guys. The only reason I'm still up is that I'm having ago at baking so all the wemon dont get the glory at our flower show tomorrow. Obviously it also has crafts, one of my fairy doors is being entered under the wood/metal section, lots of plants and I have made a fruit cake, ginger biscuits and I'm waiting for my coffee and walnut tray bake to finish cooking.
It's 11.30pm and in the morning I will have to put the icing on and get my fuchsia heads and annuals/perenials in their vase for a long day.

That coffee and walnut tray bake sounds goods, T@T, any chance of the recipe please :)

7 Aug, 2009

As long as you don't get confused & ice the fuschias!
Anyway, please stop, you're making me hungry!! Lol :~))

Gee if its a winner I shall let you have it. Its from an old McDougalls flour cook book that cost sixpence and I got from my mum about 15 yrs ago.

7 Aug, 2009

I like the sound of ginger biscuits! I love ginger! Are they similar to gingerbread men? I mean the recipe of course, T&T!

7 Aug, 2009

Thanks, T@T, I have to bake for the church coffee morning again so am looking for different ideas :)

7 Aug, 2009

I'm not sure how ginger bread men are maid. The recipe I use for the biscuits is quite sticky as you have to flour your hands and roll them into small balls. Ginger bread men mixture must be a lot stiffer as you have to use a cutter.
Likewise if they are winners I will post the recipe.

Thank you T&T! Good luck! NOT just cos I want the recipe! Lol!:~))

A friend of mine moved to Newcastle a few years ago and wanted to enter some local craft competitions. She was politely informed that she wouldn't win the cake competition until she had lived in the area for at least 30 years! Hope the same rules don't apply in Portsmouth TT

Well the show is over. My fruit cake won second, my tray bake won second, my ginger biscuits didnt get anything.

Shall write a quick blog with pics.

Tomorrow Tuesday 11th is the day that my garden gets judged.
I personally dont think its a winner as there are a lot of things that could be done to improve it. But it depends what they are looking for.
I have been told they like lots of colour, which is where I am lacking with flowers.

I finished work and went straight into the garden only to have it rain on me. I wanted to tidy up a little bit more before they come tomorrow.

Oh well it is what it is. I shall let you all know how I got on.

10 Aug, 2009

Wishing you the very best of luck for tomorrow. Slay 'Em T&T!!!
:~)))))))))))

Good luck for tomorrow, hope it goes well.

Well the news paper and judge turned up and stayed for probably no longer than about half an hour.
They were running late as it was.

The judge had a look around while the news reporter asked some questions whilst doing a video. Then it was a few photos with the photographer and the judge.

The reporter asked the judge what he liked. He said "it is a calming and restfull garden." He liked my red acer 'Bloodgood', and he also said "it gets very tropical further in"

No hint or clues to how it went.

They then left.

Not sure when we find out. Could be tomorrow or it could be the end of the week.

I didnt get chance to ask.

As soon as I hear I shall let you all know.

11 Aug, 2009

That sounds ptomising, T&T!
Good luck!

11 Aug, 2009

Fingers all crossed until you get the results. Hope you don't have to wait too long.

Thought I should have let you all know. 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Then there was my picture.

So I didnt win, but at least I was in the top ten. The gardens that did win did look fantastic mind, so you dont mind losing to such great gardens.

Mind you none of them were 3.5 yrs old such as mine. They were all well over 12yrs or more.

Better luck next time.

I've been wondering how it went T&T. Well done on getting into the top ten and glad you're going to have another go . The garden will have more time to mature and you'll have more idea of what they're looking for. Little things can sometimes make a big difference and next time you'll know what you're up against!

10 Oct, 2009

It's a big achievement in itself to be in the top ten-well done :)
You've crammed in such a lot of hard work in just a few years!
A lot of the satisfaction must be in the competing, what an experience. Good luck for your next attempt, will that be next year ?

10 Oct, 2009

Well done for making the top 10. That is a great achievement and I bet you will make it to the top in due course. So nice of you to pay tribute to the winning gardens, too :)

10 Oct, 2009

Well done! Were the judges blind?
