New raised beds and items from a salvage yard.

Well its Feburuary and the ground is all boggy and wet, if its not frozen.
So I thought I would use the space behind my shed for growing some extra veg/salad.
This space has traditionally been a dumping ground for excess plants that I have either grown from seed, taken as cuttings or generally dug up and awaiting a new home.
Together with spare pots and other garden stuff that dosent have a real home.
It gets the sun all day, so a few peices of gravel board and some old compost bags to line them, plenty of holes in the bottom with plenty of stones for drainage. I then filled the two raised beds with lots of compost from my own heaps all sieved to remove the bits that hadnt rotted down. Along with this some leaf mould and some soil that was from my up turned turfs, that had been sitting there for at least a year.
The smaller raised bed on the right of the picture had 250ltrs of multi purpose tipped in along with my own compost, leaf moul and soil.
They now have some black plastic on top to help warm it up before I start sowing and growing.
They are about 3ft deep. One is 6ft x 2ft. The other is 4ft x 2ft, this one still needs a few bits of wood to go around the edge to hide the plastic.
Also the big blue drum is going to be my potateo planter. This was in the garden when we moved in june 06 and has holes in the bottom. Previosly been used for leaf mould.
What I will have to do is update you on how everything grows. The plan is carrots, onions, chard, spring onions, lettuce, sweet corn along with plenty of others.
Lettuce is also going to get planted in this little beauty that we found at a salvage yard.
This will live at the back of the kitchen door.
Mor sempervivems I think will go in this.
Dark red at the round circular end and light green ones down the centre.
My last purchase was this
Not sure what is going in this as yet. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.
Enjoy Feburary, not long until March.

The old water tank will get used for plunging my water can in. Previously I used it for keeping my equisetum in.
I want bees, chickens, pigs and plenty of land to keep them all, then I will be well on my way to being self sufficent.

I'll bet most gardeners have a space like that behind the shed. You've made good use of it.

Be interesting to see what you use the drain for. ..My cubby space is at the back of my conifers behind my bottom pond, it hides two compost bins and last year I had two tubs of potatoes and some really good runner beans out of that area, I empty the bins and turn the compost twice a year so consequently that piece of ground gets a lot of homemade good stuff.
Maybe I should chat nicely to hubby ,show him your pics and perhaps I `ll get a raised bed or two..Its all your fault T&ts ,I` m now wondering where to move my compost bins to....lol.........

i have a narror space but not enough to get behind, wish hubby had placed the shed right up to fence then i would have had more room at front, oh well! you did well with your new items and raised beds :o))

That is a good way of utilising your spare space.I purposely wanted extra space at the back of our shed,as I have my compost bin and a water butt,as its only a small garden,I didn't want to use valuable space. Its on the longest side of the shed,so fixed guttering to both back and front, and have a water butt on both. Its also easy for painting the shed too...and hiding behind....Lol.

Sometimes,Joanella...Cold callers especially, trying to sell me double glazing, when the house is already fully done,...:o))and some other things, like a nosey neighbour who I can see long before he gets here, and is always on the scrounge,as he never wants to buy his own...wouldn't mind ,but is loaded, thats why he is, probably.ha ha
Sandra..we need a hiding space sometimes, don't we?..or just some privacy...
Lincslass.. a girl after my own heart,my sentiments exactly....:o))

lol bout the neighbour bloomer,i used to have one who sent her 3 children to borrow from different neighbours, one for bread one for eggs one for potatoes till we all twigged we were giving her a meal between us a few nights a week, some people are cheeky :o)

Ha ha,Joanella, that was a bit much.I don't begrudge giving,or helping someone out,but it sometimes gets taken for granted, and that IS cheeky,I agree....

It was an old cooking pot, it has a couple of markings on it. One says Empire the other is unrecognisable.
Its going to have lettuce growing in it. Currently seedlings in the greenhouse.
