slugs

I was very annoyed to find the young tender shoots of my Cematis ‘Polish Spirit’ had been nobbled by slugs or snails. So after a lot of thought decided to spray the nobbled stems with a soap solution (strong green soap) every day, I hoped that they wouldn’t like the taste!! and I am pleased to say it seems to have done the trick, as there are now fresh new shoots growing from the eaten stems, which, so far, have been left alone. I had made the soapy solution in the first place to spray the Aphids on some roses ( I had read somewhere that it gets rid of them). I shall continue to spray until the Clematis is well grown. I just hope this is not a coincidence and find out later that they have still been eaten!!!

We have the same problem with slugs & snails eating my clematis's and other new plants aswell. I tried broken shells as they wont slide over anything thats sharp but that didn't work. Tried a spray but that didn't work so have now put down pellets and although its not a great way for them to die, it does work and my plants can live on. They've cost me a fortune over the last few weeks and didn't know how many there was in my garden. Bleeding loads! lol Well not no more as been finding 10-20 dead ones every morning for the last few days and only a few this morning so looks like i'm near the end! Good luck with your solution

I can not do either of the above so any I find go outside on the grass verge.

I hope your soapy solution works. I have put coarse gravell around my small clematises. I don't think the slugs like to crawl over it.

Years ago I had a megga slug problem but rarely see one since I built my ponds, even a little one will do the trick. Snails, well now that's another problem, I give them to the chooks but they don't seem to know how to eat them....definately not French chics.

I have read lots of people have them on clematis, but I have never found them on mine.I'm either just lucky,or they don't like "Elsa Spath" Lol.I use salt, but in desperation,I have used pellets occasionally.I sprinkle salt now and then, round the base of my compost bin,and I find I don't get them "socialising ",on the lid, when I open it....not a pretty sight :o((

Like Heron I find my slugs are very few and put it down to the frogs and Hedgehogs and thats why I would never use slug pellets.

I grate some green 'household ' soap into very hot water, terratoonie, and swish it around till it has dissolved, don't make it too strong or it will set like jelly when cold and wont go through a spray,
