Hello again – I’m Maureen. We met last year when I came to Andrewr’s garden to help look after the plants.

I come from South Africa but no-one had warned me about the winters here. I was so cold! I tried to buy some leg warmers but the only ones I could find in your shops would barely cover my ankles. I tried asking Bruno if I could borrow his fur coat but he was fast asleep (beers do this in cold weather apparently). And Andrewr was no better off because he had gone to somewhere called Chilly.

I tried very hard to keep all the plants alive but I think this one didn’t make it – it was a hebe but Andrewr has bought a replacement

I think there may be one or two other casualties but we are waiting to see if they recover. Andrewr said I did a very good job on keeping this one alive – it took him six years to find one for sale. It is a farfugium – we had it covered wth straw AND fleece

Although this is an area for coloured foliage, there are a few flowers just now.

This one may want cutting back as it is called prune-us

And this one is offering me a drink – you-for-beer

Finally is this one – a rhododendron called ‘Everred’

This how my garden looks just now – I hope you like it

Love from Maureen

Lol Andrew, nice blog. Is this your new 'bit on the side'? It looks very established if so.

Well done Maureen for coming through the Winter ... bet that was a shock to the system! Fancy not having a coat to wear ... you'd think Andrew would have covered you with a fleece while he was having fun in Chilly! Do you have any plants close by you could nibble on? Just to get your own back on him! ... I'm sad to see his Hebe didn't survive ... at least he's found a replacement for it. I'm sure he'll teach you some more plant names soon .........

Nice to meet you Maureen. Sorry you were not able to keep all the plants alive in the winter. (I nearly died myself.) I think Andrew is sure to replace them.

Glad you have survived those frozen days of winter Maureen, your English is coming along just fine. You have done a great job looking after the plants, sorry the Hebe died though, but think a lot of them have. I am not replacing anything that has died at least not with the same plants, trying different ones. Just a bit worried it might be the same for winter from now on. Ah well, tell Andrew to get some leg warmers knitted up for you.

Great blog, Andrew! Love the garden too . . . particularly the "prune-us". Is it P. Amenogawa by any chance??

Dawns - yes, it is my bit on the side - 18 months since the first plantings

Sheila - it's prunus x cistena which is more of a shrub than a tree, getting to about five feet in height. I think it needs a good soil; it seems to struggle on poor ones

Thanks Andrew. I just love purple leaves, so will look out for this one.

I remember when you were digging those tree stumps out Andrew.
