It's Officially Spring At Devonia

Every year, there’s one job in the garden that, to me at any rate, means that spring has finally arrived. It’s tidying the main border in the back garden that’s seen from the house. This is what it’s looked like all winter.
And this is it three hours later. All the top growth cut down, ready for shredding. All the plant supports stacked, ready for use later in the season. All the old leaves raked off. And the whole border fed.
What denotes spring has arrived for you?

More or less the same as you....having a good tidy up in the garden...getting rid of the damage done in winter...in fact as the sun came out...(I´d almost forgotten what that looked like) on saturday I started....tidying up..and watching the spring bulbs come through..hoping for a good show of daffodils in a couple of weeks time.

Its watching the buds fatten on the trees and the first catkins I think, oh and all the lovely excited chatter of the birds. :0)

Been doing the same,Andrew..just got to add some feed now..so satisfying to see all the dead stuff cleared, and the weather making you feel like doing it :o) Spring for me,is seeing plants just poking through the soil, and knowing they are still alive after the winter..also sowing a few seeds in the propagator,in anticipation...

Well done Andrew ...I have done the same. It is the getting rid of all the cuttings that is the problem. I am off on holiday tomorrow so I had to do it or all the new shoots would be mixed up with the dead stuff when I get back. It is great when it is all done tho'.

my mini daffodils, Tete-a-Tete, have started blooming - spring is on its way now - which'll probably mean snow to follow shortly!

I think most of use have been enjoying the weather it seems. Like you everything is now tidy and there is now signs of life just about everywhere in the garden - so for me, signs of life = spring. Although I'm probably tempting fete by getting too excited!

Exactly the same thing Andrew, I have been all around with my secateurs and then my long handled trowel just to turn the top a bit, cut back old pondplants, started sowing in the greenhouse and today I've added some new viola's as I can now see where most of my bulbs are, a good tidy up makes all the difference.
My daffs are in flower up near the house but sadly I think I have lost a lot of bulbs, wondering if all last years (drought) conditions has rotted them..

Spring has arrived when I see the bulbs coming through the cold ground and especially when the Robins are starting to pair up and do their little dance routines. lol. they were shuffling around this morning even in the cold foggy garden. Oh and when the Blackbird starts to build or should I say finishes her nest in my old clematis/rose/hollytree lol :O) I just could not believe my eyes when I saw it was built already. Amazing how they get them so round. Yep Spring is definitely here. :O)))
