IN 10 DAYS TIME..........

We open our small garden on May 29th for the NGS……this will be our first opening.. had we known at the time it was to be the worst winter in 100 years and the driest Spring on record, we might have changed our minds!!
To open for the NGS has always been my ambition, since visiting beautiful gardens all around the country, my favourite being Eastgrove in Worcs with the most amazing borders whatever time of the year you visited, and a medium sized garden Cedar Lodge Blakeshall Wolverley, Both sadly not open now.
So to be accepted and to open on our own is rather daunting to say the least….
How many people will turn up, will they like the garden, how much milk, sugar, tea bags, squash, cakes, plants
will we have enough or too much?
Are the roses going to last, why are all the Clematis flowering now, will it rain what will we do if it does, our garden room is not that large!!
I keep making lists, buying more plants, dead heading, poor OH is worn out already.
Chelsea must be a nightmare this year, so our troubles are very small in comparison….
If any of you would like to visit we would be overjoyed to see you, I am the old wrinkly blonde (more Carol Kline than Rachel de Thame, these days) our daughters will be helping eldest daughter making her well known (locally) cup cakes grandchildren selling plants, so it will be a family affair.
Being as we are only five minutes walk from the beach it makes for a lovely day out….

One of the borders taken by Fergus (age 8) yesterday, we are hoping to make a gardener out of him, he takes a better picture than I do lol

Oh Dd I am so looking forward to visiting your garden. Floribunda is picking me up and we are coming down. It will be a long journey, so we shall be eager for that cup of tea and a cake. I can imagine how you are feeling, and would love to come and help if you were nearer. I am waiting to hear from Flori the final details, what time she will be picking me up, so hope we shall all have a lovely day weatherwise. Thinking of you ... The photo is absolutely stunning !!

Your garden looks fantastic....no need to worry about folk being critical or not liking it. I'm sure you'll have plenty of compliments on your garden and your hospitality (with your daughter's signature cupcakes)...and what fun to have Flori and Cinders arriving to give you some great support :)

I too think your urn with the heucheras looks made for the job...a lovely focus for that area of the garden. Enjoy all the compliments that will surely come your way and congratulations on your first open day, DD.

20 May, 2011

DD - your garden is looking good, well done. Visitors only see the good bits; only you know the bits you are not so happy with. Try to have enough helpers so you don't have to do anything - visitors love to talk to the owner!
Have a great day and enjoy it.
PS. Give me Carol Klein over Rachel de Thame any day

20 May, 2011

24 May, 2011

lovely photo ~ well done grandson; lovely garden ~ well done you! i hope you can relax and enjoy your open day ~ it looks beautiful.

25 May, 2011

Dawn many thanks, the wind is still causing damage to the flower beds, but, what can you do?
Sticki thanks, just hoping the weather will be ok for the day, the forcast is not brilliant.

25 May, 2011

sometimes the forecast is wrong! you could have a few umbrellas handy??!!

25 May, 2011

Hooray ... we've actually had some rain overnight and early this morning ... just after I've mulched and soaked the garden. Grrr! : o ))

26 May, 2011

Sticki good idea they would have to be very small ones as the garden is tiny and you would keep bumping in to one another ot taking someones eye out !!
Shirley had a minute shower this morning, at the moment we have gale force winds which are driving me crazy and making OH very bad tempered, he told me off for flattening the grass lol

26 May, 2011

Could you not hover a couple of inches across the grass then ... lol! The rain shower was a waste of time as the strong wind has dried everything up again! . . . .

26 May, 2011

all the best for your weather and open garden
you could make the visitors share the umbrellas ~ they will make new friends that way!!

26 May, 2011

Thanks Stiki, what a good idea. Shirley we have had a couple of good downpours this afternoon, but the wind is still gusting.

26 May, 2011

The plants will be very grateful for the rain . . .

26 May, 2011

Get some rest Dottydaisy it will soon be here - enjoy - Good Luck

27 May, 2011

Cristina no the wind is still gusting, and it is cold as well, have just given up fretting now, nothing I can do about the weather.
Emma and I made 100 cup cakes for the day, and they look very nice.

28 May, 2011
