??A DISASTER MADE GOOD??

WHEN WE CAME BACK FROM HOLIDAY, I NOTICED THAT SEVERAL OF OUR PIERIS PLANTS LOOKED ODD, AND ON CLOSER INSPECTION !!REALISED IT WAS SOME KIND OF DISEASE? SO I CHECKED ON THE NET AND IT IS PIERIS LACEBUG! WIDESPREAD IN SOUTHERN ENGLAND… TYPICAL??
DECIDED NOT TO GO WITH THE SPRAY REGIME……. TOO BAD REALLY, OBVIOUS CHOICE WAS TO REMOVE THEM!! SAD BECAUSE WE HAD MOST OF THEM OVER TEN YEARS?
SO WHAT TO DO? WE HAD BROUGHT BACK SOME LOVELY OLD PIECES OF WOOD WHICH WE FOUND ON OUR WALKS IN THE FRENCH COUNTRYSIDE… WHAT GOES WITH OLD WOOD?? FERNS OF COURSE!! SO WE CREATED A SMALL FERNERY….
I SHALL MISS THE PIERIS ESPECIALLY IN THE SPRING, I HAVE ONE PLANT LEFT, BUT I THINK THAT TOO IS INFECTED! AND CAN SPREAD TO OUR RHODODENDRONS……..SO IF ANY OF YOU ARE GROWING PIERIS! KEEP A CLOSE EYE ON THEM, IT WAS TOO LATE FOR US, THE DAMAGE WAS TOO GREAT!
STILL AS THEY SAY ONWARDS AND UPWARDS!!…….

You are up late Wildrose!! thanks for your kind comments, just hoping the ferns will survive better than the Pieris, they are long lived so I believe!!

I'm sorry about your pieris plants but admire your fortitude.

Better removed than the bugs getting a hold on everything else. The corner still looks nice though DD.

Thanks Bathgate if you knew just how many nasties could ruin your plants, you would never garden again!!

The fern border is lovely - has a real peaceful feel about it. Shame a bout the Pieris but your solution is great.

Another bug invading the south. Gosh, we are lucky that we don't get all these horrid beasties....yet! Your new mini fernery is lovely. I think I prefer it to Pieris. They are nice, but a little dull after a while.

Thanks for the warning Angela, I'll be checking my Pieris tomorrow. It's a long term favourite, so I'd be very upset to lose it.:( Your solution is very positive - good for you!

Such a shame to lose treasured plants but the fernery has its own charms too.
So, there are baddie lacewings as well as good ones, never knew there were different types, thanks for the alert, hope they don't come eastwards.

I like pieris too but this new creation of yours is very attractive. Ferns are beautiful.
I think it has been quite a difficult year in the garden with many bugs and diseases out there waiting to spoil our hard work!
