***WHATS YOUR CHOICE***

Its that time of the year again, cake baking for our open garden, I always used to make the cakes two days before hand, until I found out nobody else does, they all bake them and freeze on the day of baking and ice and fill them the day before they open…..why did no-one tell me this? 12 cakes in two days was really hard work…..
I must admit I was very sceptical, until I tried it, and honestly you cannot tell……..anyway I thought I would conduct a cake survey, we found people prefer a large slice as opposed to cupcakes, are you one of those? below are a few pics from our open days…
Well what would you go for, given a free choice, I would be really interested to know, me ? I would go for the coffee and walnut every time or a chocolate brownie……
Thanks for reading and hopefully taking part…..
Dotty…
Btw I did not make all these cakes my eldest daughter made the cupcakes, she was convinced they would be best sellers, not so….

Wow it all looks wonderful! I can never make my efforts look as good as that.
I would go for the fruit cake or the flapjack as these days I find cream and icing a bit too much.
Hope you have a very successful day and don't get too tored!

Mouth watering! A slice of cake for me, I'm not keen on cup cakes.

I'm like you - coffee and wallnut or a chocolate brownie :)
Cup cakes are too small and fiddly.
Good luck with your open day ...

I don't like cup cakes,as I find then too sickly, but fruit cake,Victoria sponge, tray bakes, and any other type of cake, and I'm very happy to try them all..yours look wonderful,Angela, and I also freeze most of mine in advance..so glad you tried it this year...your open day is bound to be a huge success,as always..just wish I lived nearer .:o) xx

Karen you might need to do a polenta cake, I did one last year, and it was really popular, going to make 2 this time....Mary Berry's recipe is a good one, so many people are gluten free these days....you can use the labels I keep them outside for years (as !long as the pens are waterproof)

Just a dish of strawberries for me, no cake, but if cake, then the brownies or the victoria sponge if it was fresh cream in it. Thank you :) And hope all goes well :)
eta forgot to add - or the fruit cake :)

I like the first one, well anything with strawberries will draw me in. Is that walnuts? That one looks good too. Yum-with fresh coffee!

Fruit cake for me, every time
7 May, 2018
You make it VERY difficult to make a choice! I'd love them all! But if I had to make a choice then I think the fruit cake & the Victoria sponge!

Yesterday, I went for the Lemon Drizzle. The bigger & the gooier the better. Yours, definately the walnut cake. The purple icing? a bit of a put off?
7 May, 2018
Mine would be the Walnut. Lovely choice
8 May, 2018
Lovely... the little cakes with strawberries on please !
8 May, 2018
That's great advice, thank you so much :) I love Polenta Cake, so that's no problem. I have made it before.
8 May, 2018
They all look delicious. I tend to go for some type of chocolate cake, but your Victoria Sponge with the strawberries has my mouth watering, so that's the outright winner for me today.
I also agree that I prefer a slice of cake, rather than a cupcake.

Walnut for me also DD but they all look yum.Good luck with your open day, they will all enjoy your fantastic garden.

Thank you all for your very helpful comments, the old fashioned cakes seem to be the most popular.......so far I have made.......
Bara Brith
Teisen Lap
Tea Loaf offered buttered!
Chocolate and vanilla Marble cake
Lemon layer X2 especially for you Siris!!
Banana coconut and pecan loaf..
Coffee and walnut layer
Ginger and treacle spiced Traybake
Cappuccino
Carrot
will do a couple of Victoria and Polenta and possibly some scones (not made by me, I am rubbish at scones!!) but a good standby)
All we need is some good weather, not too hot, but not wet!! otherwise there will be a lot of cake left over!! its a pity you all live so far away, because you would be very welcome, and you could take home all the leftovers!!

DD: Coffee and Walnut cake and Victoria Sponge with Jam and cream, please!
My husband is diabetic so I no longer bake. When I see cakes in farm shops and fetes, after slicing them up into portions, I freeze them.
What about Welsh cakes, DD? Men love these and Delia has a good recipe borrowed from her Welsh MIL!
Cup cakes dry out very quickly, I think.
Your goodies look amazing and I wish you lived just around the corner!!I could help you tidy up1 :O)

slice of cake as there is less 'crust' than on a cup cake. if that makes sense. as for flavour it depends on how I feel on the day and how it looks. Tea if its from a pot not dunked tea bag or milky weak coffee and cake choices my favs are coffee and walnut, lemon drizzle, Victoria sponge, tea loaf, raspberry and white chocolate but not in any order.

Do these treats come with a garden tour? I'll be there in spirit.
8 May, 2018
A slice would be my choice every time, Fruit Cake, Victoria Sponge or plain old Madeira, they all look lovely Dd and I'm sure will be very much appreciated on the day....
8 May, 2018
Thanks Dd, I'll book a piece on your open day, please.

Eirlys I do usually make welsh cakes, but decided two Welsh treats was enough this year, people will think I have a thing for them lol!! (the Welsh people that is)
Seaburn raspberry and white chocolate sounds lovely, who's recipe is that please?
Bathgate they are extra, most people only come for the tea and cake, and rush around the garden( to be polite) to get the best seats and the best cake.......we have no illusions!
Lincs we have given up making cupcakes only the younger generation seem to like them and as most of the garden visitors are well over 40 it is not worth it!
8 May, 2018
Siris done!!
8 May, 2018
IT's a wonderful spread DD, you are very generous.

Cupcakes are just a jazzed up version of a 'bun'. That's what they were called in my youth anyway, now they are fairy cakes I think! Fairy cakes were the ones that had the bit taken out filled with cream and the 'wings' stuck back on (these are now butterfly cakes I think) Complicated I think! Buns were something everyone's Mother made in a hurry, so us older generations would I think always turn to a slice of cake. Me personally, it would have to be carrot cake if made properly, not with a modern tasteless topping as has been passed off as carrot cake in some places!
Yours look wonderful, a proper Sunday tea spread, posh for when the Vicar came!!

raspberry and white chocolate is my daughter's. she makes a slightly drier Victoria sponge [6oz of all ingredients in 2x82 tins with an extra tablespoon of flour] then throws in a handful of halved fresh raspberries and white chocolate chips. Don't think we really follow recipes that accurately but they always turn out tasting good ;o)

There's no contest - chocolate brownies every time. Though, if they had all gone I'd go for the strawberry sponge as long as it's real cream.
Like some of the others I find cupcakes too sweet and sickly.
Oh dear, now I really fancy a brownie. What have you done, DD?
9 May, 2018
I`ll take a slice please (any type they all look delicious)) as I`m not too keen on cup cakes. Hope the weather keeps fine for you and all your visitors.
10 May, 2018
Thanks Seaburn it sounds delicious......
Sorry Arbuthnot sending you a virtual brownie........
Stroller it seems the majority of people prefer a big slice of cake.......thank you all for taking part, so no cup cakes! then
Just keep your fingers crossed for some good weather everyone!
10 May, 2018
Oh I'm going to change my mind now - I want the ginger and treacle traybake - no contest!
10 May, 2018
Stera, you won't be disappointed, a really good traditional cake, I love it! always hope that there is some left over!
12 May, 2018

Wow! Tough choice. They all look fantastic! I think theVictoria Sponge is the one for me if I’m forced to choose! I don’t have a big enough freezer, So I’ll be baking every Sunday! I’m going to make Lemon Drizzle Cake, Chocolate Cake, Belgian Biscuits and some sort of tray bake. Oh, and I’ve been meaning to ask you Angela. How do you fing your black plant labels and white pen last? Would it be safe to start putting them out now do you think?
