Barrel pond....... another little project!!

Our middle border has always been a bit of a mess, filled mostly with perennials, and never looked right, so we decided it was time to redesign the whole bed, having won £40.00 worth of garden tokens part of the In Bloom competition (see blog) we decided to buy a large whiskey half barrel and sink it into the ground…we have done this before, but on a smaller scale…..
Having removed at least 40 plants, now in pots!! Peter dug the hole 3ft X 18 ins deep, ready to receive the barrel, which arrived this afternoon, just waiting for SIL to help lower the barrel into the hole….then I can finish the planting, and another little project will be finished,….

I thought OH was going to dive into the barrel, before the frogs take it over.

(I thought your OH looked wistful because the barrel was empty!!)

Nice size, and plenty of scope for lots of plants.

Ladies the barrel is in, couldn't wait for SIL did it ourselves, where theres a will!! it is taking a long time to fill, the wood had dried out and the cracks are quite large, I have planted all around it doesn't look too bad considering the time of the year!
Seaburn, Sheila,Siris, and Eirlys thank you for your kind comments...

Are you plugging the cracks...or do they close up naturally as the wood swells? I had a chuckle at your suggestion that the bed was ‘a bit of a mess’ ...none of your garden is ever that! But at the same time, I know we think along similar lines and as you know, I too have been removing perennials. Can’t wait for the update, which no doubt will comw soon!

The barel looks nice. It will be a shame to sink it into the ground.

Karen we have not plugged the cracks, so far so good, it has taken a few days, but we are getting there.......we now have pots of perennials all over the place, I am so loath to get rid of them, so we are redesigning another border, as you do!!
Brentsa thank you, next week, all being well!
Hywel I know its a beautiful barrel, but we want another small pond, but not all the work that goes with it, and it goes well with the area, slight woodland feel.......
