Garden Visitors*

*The only thing good about this awful winter is the fact that the birds are visiting my garden in droves in search of food, This has kept me very busy putting out two meals a day,I have tried to include a variety of food, Dried Meal Worms, Suet pellets, seeds, nuts Biscuits. Breadcrumbs and Fat Balls. I have even got Harry involved making additional bird feeders to hang in the trees.

All our work as paid off as we have been rewarded with regular visits each day from Robins, Wrens Bluetits, Great Tits, Greenfinch, Blackbirds, Doves, Coal Tits,Dunnocks,Chaffinch, Thrush, Wood Pigeons and Jays but the ones I am most thrilled about are a Flock of Long Tail Tits who have kept us amused visiting 3 times a day. I have tried to take some photos to show you but they are so quick flitting about that its difficult to capture them!
Here are some of the pictures, hope you enjoy

The Long Tail Tits have been coming two or three times a day, there have been eight or nine in the flock, so Harry made some birdfeeders which we put in front of the window in our front garden so we have a grand stand view.

The next three pictures show the Tits feeding from one of Harry’s feeders made from the lid of a Ferro Roche choclate box and mounted on a pole lol

In this picture you can see the homemade Tree hanging feeder, made from a plastic plant pot lid , some plastic tubing [to keep it from tilting and some wire, it works really well!

The Robin’s were interested but prefered eating from the ground [sorry Harry].

Followed by Mr and Mrs Blackbird

Of course this Handsome Thrush had his share too!

Followed by my dear freinds Lovey and Dovey

The Jay was very shy peeping from his perch, but he must have been hungry as he eventually came down and enjoyed a feast!

I have yet to capture the Bluetits, Coal Tits ,Chaffinch and Dunnock, but I will add them to my blog if Im luck enough to get them on camera.
It was interesting to see that both the Blue Tits and Coal Tits have been going in and out of the Nesting box checking it out, so will be watching them closely lol

Enjoy your Gardens and your Birds;0))*

A great selection of birds are visiting your garden PP. You have some great ideas there with your homemade feeders, I especially like the hanging one with the tubing and shall have a go myself with it! We get a few long tail tits but I've never managed to get a pic of them either. :o( I have just finished talking to my sister in Norfolk and she was telling me that she had a flock of about 30 of these birds feeding in her laburnum tree! She said it was a truly amazing sight and probably one never to be seen again. :o))

Lovely pictures and blog,Carole.I love the jay,i have never seen one here. Our blackbirds and thrushes seem to gang up on the sparrow family..its hard work feeding them all though, isn't it ? Harry has done a great job with the feeders..something so simple, but they will appreciate the extra feeding stations...Thankfully,it has given it to come a bit milder this week..may get out in the garden a bit,to see if anything is starting to grow..

Thanks everyone for your kind comments,
Sanbaz I have seen next doors cat prowling around I just bang on the window but you can't be there all the time and it is nature, but I would be so upset if one of the little birds was killed just because I was putting out food, can't win can you?
Lily that must have ben amazing! I have heard that when they nest there are around 20-30 forming a great big ball that would really be something to see'0)

Sandra it is a lot of work but worth it just to see them feeding, I have had a wander around the garden to see whats happening, not a lot looking! closely could see signs of a few bulbs starting to poke through, a few plants looking the worse for wear and others lookng ok, but very few flowers, maybe next month things will start showing signs of life;0)

Lovely blog Carole, and great pics....especially the Long-tailed Tits. They are so hard to catch...we don't get them often here but the odd time, you can here them piping down the garden. Smashing to see them up close! Lovely Jay too....isn't it great when you know the birds are enjoying what you've done?
Happy New Year to you and yours!

Brilliant blog, PP. Those little long tailed tits are so beautiful and, as you say, so fast! You're lucky to have the Jay visiting too. Often watching the birds is more entertaining that any programme on TV :)

I was in the garden when 10 longtails dived onto the feeder & they totally ignored me at only 7 or 8 feet away, quite incredible few moments. All I could think of was how I wish I had the camera! There constant hyper activity & comunication chatter is such an endearing thing to see & hear. Generally they pop down in 5 or 6's so ten was brilliant & good to know these tiny birds are competing well with the harsh winter. I'll pop some of my photo's up but through double glazing plus being back-lite they are not good photo's but still fun trying to get the little rascal's in action.

Hi Bampy its an amazing sight to see them flitting about everywhere, I hear them them first as the feeders are right outside my window! will look out for your pictures;0)

What fantastic photos of the Long Tailed Tits, PP! :-)) I can't recall ever having seen them before. I've seen other Tits but not these. Never seen a Jay either, though as a boy I can remember being fascinated by them!

I'd like to do something for the birds here myself but with so many people coming & going all hours of the day they would never settle down.

We do see Sparrows though, especially at nest building time. They come into our balcony & steal threads of off my conical hanging baskets. They have coconut fibre lining. I just love to see them fighting over a strand, just trying to get it free. :-))

Oh Pansy, all your efforts are so paying off. Brilliant. Great blog and pics.

Balcony. We get long tailed tits and jays but no house sparrows, lucky you. Quite rural here but sadly I suspect a neighbour last year shot jays as i found a few dead ones in our woodland, about 4 in 2 weeks. :-((((((. What can u do, I think they fall into the vermin bracket like magpies :-((

16 Jan, 2011

Oh Dawn thast is so upsetting such colourful and magestic birds!

16 Jan, 2011

I agree Pansy, they are so beautiful with gorgeous markings.
