2008 Goes Out Whiter Than White in My Garden...

Well, it’s the last day of 2008 and I awoke to a world of white this morning. There was a hard air-frost in the night and another one tonight. I got out to grab a few shots, before retreating back indoors and huddling by the fire for most of the rest of the day!
My little pond is frozen over. The grasses were all white with frost.
Peacock.
Stipa gigantea.
Summer house.
Birtie is most unimpressed with all this white stuff – it makes her toes cold.
The sprouts in the veggie patch looked like a group of alien creatures… The frost will convert the starch to sugar, making the sprouts nice and sweet.
I think we can safely assume that this pot was NOT frost proof…
A little yellow rose braves even this harshest of weather.
Feline wisdom: Birtie knows exactly the best place to be in this kind of weather; nose tucked under her tail to keep it warm :-)
With very best wishes for the New Year to all lovely GoY members and their families and pets. Here’s to Summer 2009. Long live GoY!
Sarah.

Thanks Mr B :-) It's the first time I've grown sprouts. Usually only eat them around xmas time - but this year we've been having them rather a lot. If you happen to be in this region some time in the next couple of months, look out for the street with the green cloud over it! ha ha ha... Hope you don't have to pry too many men from lampposts in the morning... x-D Happy New Year ;-)

Hywel I was forced to eat them as a child sprouts had to go before my pudding and if they didnt back in the larder ( no fridges then ) till I finished them.
I never met Sam and Ella but wondered why these people got mentioned so often in our house !

Happy New Year Hywell & Blodyn :-) Do you know, a few sprouts have gone rotton and now that corner of the garden really stinks sometimes! They've been fun to grow, but I don't think I'll bother again - too much bother what with the catapillars and the stinkyness!

Happy New Year to you too Sarah.
The frost does make everything look so picturesque. Birtie has the right idea though.
I grew sprouts the year before last. They were looking great and just about ready to be harvested. Then one night we had a black bear come into the back yard and he rolled all over them. I guess he must have liked the smell or something. Squashed all the plants, pulled some up, played with and popped the soccer ball and basket ball that the kids had left out and played with my son's punching bag that was hanging on the swing frame. Left a couple of nice "calling cards" and climbed back over the fence and left. LOL. I haven't grown sprouts since.

Oh Gilli, you have some mighty garden pest problems over there, makes my leaf eater pest look ridiculous ;-)
I hate sprouts but must have 3 on my Christmas lunch plate or it isn't right. Adore the photo of Bertie.
Happy New Year Sid.

Happy new year Sid, it certainly looks really frosty, so heavy, we have a bit of heavy frost but nothing like this, dispite the poor plants it does give everything a 'magical' feel.

Happy New Year Sid, love the pictures. Like that here and soooo cold but looks lovely. Bertie has clearly been talking to my cat because he spends his time curled up like that on the spare bed. :)

HNY. Love the picture of the holly and berries covered in frost - would make a good home-made Xmas card

Gilli - ha ha that's so funny! Sounds like he had great fun!
Ams - I wonder whether they make 'bear-pellets'?! All we have to worry about is the odd cat or squirrel digging up the veg......think I'd give up if I had bears!
Hi Ang - yes it is beautiful. I think there will be casulties in the garden - my spotted laural does not look too happy...
Thanks Pottygardener - I don't blame these cats one bit :-)
Thanks Andrew and Clarice - HNY!

Bears don't come into the yard too often but they are around. Over the fence at the bottom of the garden is an old disused orchard. The trees are all overgrown but they still produce small apples. In the fall the bears come through to munch on the fallen apples and fatten up for winter hibernation. Usually they stay on the far side of the fence. This one must have been young or particularly playful and obviously had a taste for sprouts.... LOL
The cats do have the right idea. Always find the warmest and coziest spot. Mine like to sit right on top of the forced air heating vents.

Gilli - I visited Canada many years ago and saw wild bears - they are amazing animals. If I visit again I must remember to bring some sprouts to leave out for them!
Birtie claims the comfyest seat early in the evening and if you move her or pinch her seat when she's off having a bite, she gives you the most filthy looks! x-D

These a beautiful series Sid good to stay positive by thinking its good for the sprouts.I ve always loved them and could never understand why so many think they are awful.
We ve had a few days and nights like this which unusual being so close to coast.Tonight promises to be very cold and have a mental picture of those tempted to relieve themselves after a night of heavy drinking being found stuck to lamposts in the morning.
Happy New Year to you and your family Sid Best wishes for 2009.
