Seeds, seeds, seeds!!!

Spring is just around the corner. The snowdrops are in flower. The days are getting a little bit longer. And I’ve been rummaging in my Big Box of Seeds…
This picture is indicative of a person who has no self-control when it comes to the seeds section in the garden centre. What can I say. I’m very weak.
Here is a list of all the flower seeds I intend to sow this spring.

Uh, oh….. does anyone else get the feeling I’ve bitten off a bit more than I can chew?! And this list doesn’t include all the veggie seeds I’ve got too…. :-O
Where exactly this lot is going to go, I’ve yet to work out. But I do intend to sort out the ‘island bed’, so hopefully there will be some room in there, and around the pond too I’m going to remove a few plants. I think I’ll have to get some more trellis work in for the climbers…
By the way, all those plants I’ve marked with an astrisk are ones that have been sent to me by GoY members! I won’t mention any names as I don’t want to embarrass anyone, but you know who you are and I can’t thank you enough for your generosity! Many of these seeds were from swaps offered on the GoY Seed Swap page. Sadly, it seems that the Seed Swap page is going to be deleted due to lack of use :-(
Some of the hand-made seed packets that have come to me from all over GoY Land :-D
This is Eccremocarpus scabre which I grew from seed sent to me by a kind GoYer last year.
And here is Cleome hassleriana, also grown from seed from last years seed swap.
In this photo, the purple Morning Glory on the trellis was from last years seed swap too!
Finally, some of you may have noticed I haven’t been around on GoY much just lately. This is because I’ve been dead busy. As some of you know, I do a bit of artwork and back in November I took the plunge and advertised myself on e-bay offering pet portraits. I’ve had quite a few to do, which has been keeping me really busy, which is great! A blog will follow with photos as soon as I get the chance. Be good ;-)

I like weak Sid....Lol! You'vs a fantastic selection there........I've the Tithonia Torch too...this year, I'm definitely going to get it to flower.....I grew it last year but it died off...:o( Have the Cerinthe already up in the greenhouse...they grow like wildfire........good luck with the pet portraits and well done! Shall we see any sneak previews on here....:o) X

Well there's no doubt that you'll know how to get good results, as for how many, I suggest you sow just a few from each packet. It appears that you're going to find that time will become scarce, even in recession people will find money for 'pet portraits', we have one of out previous Lhasa.

Lots of lovely seeds...
With your skill, those will turn into lots of lovely plants :o)
That's good to know you have the pet portrait work ...
I bet the owners of the animals are delighted ! x

You know what they say Sid " if you want something doing ask a busy person " good luck with your pet portraits ... and with finding room for your fantastic seed collection . :o)

Hi Sid, I WAS going to ask where you had been! You have nearly as many seeds as I have! I to must admit to being magnetically pulled to the seed shelf not only in the garden centre but B&Q, Tesco's Netto's in fact anywhere!
If your pet portraits are anywhere near the quality of the drawing of Holly you did for us then I expect you will be buying a mansion with acres of land for all those seeds! Lol
Good luck with it and come back soon!
Ian xx

Thought i had quite a few seed packets, but only a few to yours, good luck with all your seed planting.

Oh dear, Sarah - but I'm glad I'm not the only one! lol.
I have made a start, though - antirrhinums in the greenhouse have germinated! :-) What shall I plant next........hmmm...

Hi folks - good to hear about all your seed-sowing antics! lol
Janey - yes I remember you saying that you didn't have much luck with the Tithonia - let's hope for a sunnier summer and hopefully they'll do better....
Heron - I agree , I will only sow a few seeds from each packet. I do that anyway, so that if the first lot are a disaster, then I have some to try again with. Did you have a Lhasa Apso (sp?) my brother had one, they are lovely dogs.
Ian - yes they are a bit magnetic arn't then! lol I have a long way to go before I get that mansion and acres of land x-)
Barbara - Well done with your snapdragons! I have a new (last year) heated propagator - just got it out of its box today to make sure all was in working order...I'm just a bit concerned that everything will germinate really quickly and then Ill have a job keeping everything warm enough for the rest of the winter. I had that problem with some sweet peppers a few years ago. They germinated well in the airing cupboard, but the weather was so cold that they were too cold on the windowsills to grow and eventually died off before the weather improved. Bit of a worry that.... now, if I had a heated greenhouse as well................................. ;-)

Ah well, you'll need a piggy-bank then, won't you?
My problem is going to be how many to prick out (as usual!). I didn't prick out enough Hollyhocks last autumn, and I think there's only one left alive. Boo hoo! I have lots of Polemonium plantlets, though - I shall probably pot them on and put them on the plant stall in June. Got to think about 'Joe Public' now!

Hi Sid...wondered where you had got to.Well done taking the plunge.Judging by your lovely Christmas card print of our bird photo...you cant fail to deliver...brilliant !

LOL..you are Mad Sarah!!!
I love that in a person!....
So glad your portrait work is going well! ((hugs)) xx :) <3

That's a shame about the seed swap page - still as they say, 'if you don't use it you lose it'.
3 Feb, 2010
Barbara - I'll need a pretty big piggy bank wont I.....I need to save up for a few acres as well really LOL I tend to sow just the amount of seed I need plus a few more for luck, so I prick all of them out. I grew hollyhocks too last summer. They've been outside all winter in 3in pots - I THINK they're doing ok....? They're double ones. I intend keeping a few, giving a few away to friends and then I can take the rest to a carboot, which is a good way to get rid of surplus plants - the money generally goes on buying more compost....honestly, I dont know what happens to the stuff!
Bb - Aw shux... thanks ;-)
Cat - you only just realised?! Would have thought the 300+ comments about custard would have told you that! LOL LOL Thanks for the hugs ;-)
Wagger - Aye, it's a shame. Thing is, it did get used...ah well...

I agree, Sid, I sent some to a couple of people too. Thought it was a great idea but a bit difficult to find and I think a lot of people didn't know it existed - perhaps if we ask for it back again next summer at the beginning of the main seed collecting time?
4 Feb, 2010
good luck with them I do the same always sow to meny
4 Feb, 2010
lol Donnah - glad I'm not the only one!
5 Feb, 2010
You are a busy girl Sid. I think you might need to buy some extra seeds trays :-) Looking forward to seeing your portrait pics.
7 Feb, 2010
Hehe.....yes, Dawn, I think you could be right!
7 Feb, 2010
I get a bit over enthusiastic with seeds Sid, then I realise I need compost and trays etc., but we love it dont we.
9 Feb, 2010
We certainly do Dawn ;-) So far I've sowed 5 lots of seeds from my list, so not doing too badly so far - still got plently of seed trays and comp, but not sure what I will do when it comes to pricking out....I'm gunna need about 500 pots LOL
10 Feb, 2010
Then, where do we put them once potted up? I think a part of my veg plot has to be dedicated to 'potting on'
10 Feb, 2010
Each year my lawn gets smaller........ lol

Hi Sid, A seed swap page where is it?????????????? I've heard we shouldn't give out our addresses so how do the seeds come to you?. Please tell me how big is your garden. It must enormous for all the plants you will grow!!
29 Mar, 2010
Im a new member and would use the seed swap page. Please don't delete it!!! I feel like Ive been here for a long time.Everyone is so nice
29 Mar, 2010
Hi Great - I feared the seed swap page had already been deleted, so I've just been looking for it. I can't find it I'm afriad, so I think it must have been deleted, which is a real pity. I think the owners of the site expect us to do swaps privately or by doing a blog to say we've got seed to swap. Regards your address, we're told we're not to put our addresses in an open forum, but many GoYers exchange addresses via PM (private message) and that's you you'll need to do to seed swap - many GoYers have also met up with each other, either to visit each others gardens or to visit garden shows etc.
My garden is a good size for a town garden, but it's not huge lol I just had a look at your garden and I'd say mine is probably about 3 times the size - which is enough!! I will keep a few of all the things I'm growing, and give away, swap or sell the surplus at a carboot. I plant very closesly in my garden - there is no soil visible come May!!!
Glad you are enjoying GoY - it's very addictive tho!!

Thanks for looking sarah
