Garden Waste (Les Barker)

Garden Waste (Les Barker)
I’d never had a garden,
So I smiled all summer; watched it grow.
Flowers came and flowers went,
With gifts of colour, shape and scent.
And as I watched the seasons turn,
I knew I had a lot to learn.
One thought in my young head was placed;
One must not waste one’s garden waste.
And so I bought a compost bin,
And put my garden waste therein,
In hopes in time it would decay,
And so it proved one spring day.
I spread it on my garden so
The mulch would help my garden grow.
And so it proved, for very soon,
I found I had to cut and prune.
I cut and pruned and hacked and mowed,
It seemed I had more than I’d sowed!
Still June, it seems impossible;
My compost bin’s already full.
I bought a second compost bin,
And put my garden waste therein,
In hopes in time it would decay,
And so it proved one autumn day.
I spread it on my garden, those two bin fulls;
How my garden grows!
And grow it did, for very soon,
I found I had to cut and prune.
The garden waste that I had used,
Made richer soil which thus produced more garden waste.
What can I do?
I filled in one,
I filled in two.
I bought a third compost bin,
And put my garden waste therein,
In hopes in time it would decay,
And so it did one April day.
Bed and lawn, I mulched them both,
And watched in fear for signs of growth.
And grow it did, for very soon,
I found I had to cut and prune….
….And hack and strim and mow and chop,
Another bloody bumper crop!
A vintage year for garden waste,
And soon the problem must be faced.
I make a start: I fill bins one and two and three,
The work goes on!
For I have cut and gathered in,
Enough to fill another bin!
I went and bought bin number four.
I’ll not do this any more….
I go out every evening late;
I sneak out through my garden gate,
I lay my treasure down instead,
On someone else’s flowerbed.
And having thus enriched their loam,
I steal their slugs and take them home.
I see their gardens, how they grow!
I look at mine and does it? No.
I watch them toil, I watch them weep………
………..I close my eyes and go to sleep.
This is a poem by Les Barker – who you can see/hear in action on YouTube. The photos are of my garden :-)
Hope this gave you all a good chuckle on this wet Friday afternoon!

Brilliant poem! After a liberal spread of sheep manure on our vegetable garden I found myself yelling at the tomatoes and beans, one summer's day when my partner was on the balcony waving a G&T at me , "Stop Now! Let me rest and enjoy!" :o)) Thanks Sid!

I don't think even Lord Byron waxed so lyrical about compost bins.
Brilliant. Your compost works well, looking at your lovely garden in full growth.

'Extinct' ghost orchid found in Herefordshire wood
The ghost orchid has been reclassified as "critically endangered"
A rare wildflower has been found in Herefordshire.
A ghost orchid, a pale plant with no leaves, has been found in an oak wood in the county.
Plantlife, a conservation charity, had thought the flower to be extinct in the UK, as the last recorded sighting was in Buckinghamshire in 1986.
A spokesman said the sighting was wonderful news but added one plant did not mean the species was growing in great numbers.
He added the plant had now been reclassified as critically endangered rather than extinct.
The orchid's location is being kept secret.
Hi Sid , I have copied and pasted the article for you , our local Newspaper is www.EDP24.co.uk

Thanks for that Amy - I know of Plantlife, they do some good work. But no wonder the Ghost Orchid is in trouble not having any leaves??!!

Thanks Muddy - Miss Willmott pops up where she likes, so that combo was more luck than judgement lol

Hi Sid
It has taken me years to organize my compost bin and I have outgrown it in my first year. I need about half a dozen bins, plus a larger area to burn branches.
I need a bigger garden to deal with the off-cuts.
We are supplied with brown compost bins in Glasgow and I have filled three plus five black bags to refill the brown bins once they have been emptied on the 24th March and six smaller blue bags.
I also have a large collection of slugs and snails!
