A Snowy Wandering....

Well, not to be outdone by all the other lovely snowy pics on GoY at the moment, I just throught I’d share a few snaps I took while out enjoying the snow yesterday.

This is what my garden looked like when I got up on Wednesday morning…

I wandered down to our local park. I believe the ‘proper’ name is the King George Playing Fields, but to all the locals they’re the Bishop’s Meadows. I think one of the great things about Hereford is it’s trees. These are beech and are about 70 years old I think.

I read somewhere that the design of British cathedrals might have been based on groves of trees. Looking at these I can see why some people think that…

Hereford Cathedral competes in height with a Sequoiadendron giganteum, while the River Wye slides by below. There is a cedar of Lebanon to the left of the picture, which I think stands in the bishop’s garden.

We cross the bridge and look back to admire her. Her proper name is the Queen Victoria Suspension Bridge, but her friends know her at the Vicky Bridge.

Behind us is another green space called the Castle Green. This was the site of a moated castle, but little evidence remains of it. A small section of the moat remains as a duck pond popular with families. It is said that the bases of the pillars that supported the gatehouse and drawbridge of the castle remain beneath the murky water of the duck pond.

The boys had done a good job building this igloo!

The Castle Green is a great place for sledging – I used to sledge here myself years ago! But you couldn’t get those plastic sledges then….I had a nice hand-me-down wooden one instead and you could get about 3 people on it too lol

There is a good story behind this Monkey Puzzle tree, but that will have to wait for another blog!

Meanwhile, back home…

My greenhouse looks like an iced spongecake!

…inside it looks like a giant spider has gone mad! In fact it’s a fleece protecting a few of my plants. They need it at the moment – we’re forecast -8 degrees here tonight.

Look, icicles!

Birtie says she’s not going down there in all that nasty white stuff!

What’s along here? More snow!

Yup, it’s down there too!

Look! It’s up to my armpits!

Meanwhile, there’s a flawless china-blue sky overhead…..

Well, it’s getting cold now. Come on Birtie, let’s go in and get some coco on :-)

Hope you’re all keeping well and warm :-)

Love the blog, Sid, especially the trees and the cathedral. Birtie is the star, of course, that's a great rear end view :) The monkey puzzle tree looks like a Christmas tree with candles on! Glad you are enjoying the snow.

What gorgeous pics, Sarah and I love your commentary! Especially the bit about the cathedral of trees...very true...and there are quite a few called such around the UK
We have one on the west coast near Oban....and one wonders which idea came first - the trees or the cathedrals!!!
Poor puss...I'll bet she was glad to get inside!! I would have been - however beautiful that sky...LOL

Thanks for the nice comments folks :-)

Barbara - I love your scowl Z:( very good! Poor you - I do feel for all those that do not like the snow and those that can't get about very well. I'm lucky in that there's a super market just down the road and the city centre is a short walk away too, so we're ok for food and seeing people etc and the road outside our house is clear of snow....so we're able to enjoy it more here!

Grenville & Alan - yes, I'm keeping nice and cosy working from home this week thanks :-) It was minus 9 here last night too....brrrrrrrrrr x-)

Cat - no snowman! I like to leave the snow nice and pristine in the garden :-) There is an army of snowmen being built down on the Bishop's Meadows! It's quite scary really lol

Alz - I read somewhere that the early Christians wanted to convert the Pagans so the early churches were built to resemble the woodland glades where the Pagans worshiped. Don't know if there's much truth in that, but you can see why people might think that can't you...

Louise - Birtie says Meow to Millie and Maddie :-)

Ian - Hullo ;-) When were you in Hereford? BTW I'm not a Chicken of the Wood, I'm a Dryad's Saddle ;-)

Sid, Birtie's told Millie that it's okay for her to come over, she's bored witless and needs some company seeing as she can't go outside ;-))

Louise - please send Millie over. Birtie is bored silly and is getting destructive! lol Her claws are also getting too long coz she's not going out - so she keeps sticking to things LOL I'm thinking of taking a nail file to her ;-)

Mad - yes it does doesn't it....

Clarice - oh dear poor you!

TT - Thanks and yes I'm keeping nice and warm and safe....but I'm meant to go into work tomorrow and it's started snowing again here, so not sure what I'm going to do?! The monkey puzzle has a good story behind it........ It is not an old tree - I remember when it was planted when I was about 10 years old so that would make it about 25 years old. It was about the same height as me when it was planted but it's pretty big now - almost as tall as the houses opposite :-)

10 Jan, 2010

Wow - that's going some then as they are notoriously slow growers!
I had two in my garden when I was a kid and they were about 12 foot tall then and don't seem to have more than doubled that in the past 60 years!!!

Great stuff!!
Really good to see someone else enjoying it not moaning about it!!!
Very cool cat!

21 Feb, 2010

Yes I agree,,,,,but when you get weeks of the white stuff - the novelty does wear off a bit - especially with the temp not rising above zero for days on end either.
It look absolutely gorgeous...fairly makes the gardens look good ..not a weed in sight....;;>>)))
