Problem alleyway

This is my unloved alleyway, the way into my back garden via the side of my house. As it’s the only way visitors to my garden can access it, I would like to ‘spruce it up’. A few issues, it’s a wind tunnel although the gully has some protection. The brick wall opposite the gully is south facing so gets very warm. The gully is in shade, can’t really fill it up with soil otherwise the fence panels will start to rot. The gully or ditch approx 40 cm or 16” deep. So I’ve part filled it it with golden gravel and it looks better already. However, I’d love to plant something in the gravel. A friend suggested in placing 5 plastic pots evenly spaced buried amongst the gravel and planting some agapanthus? Would need to add more gravel but don’t want to do that until I’ve decided what A d if I’m going to plant in the gravel. As you walk past and look down onto plants it should be a reasonable size (alpines would be too small). Any suggestions welcome.

Hi Amsterdam, you’re right, it’s looking smart already with the bright gravel added. I think well spaced pots would be quite attractive, you could have some ornamental grasses planted in the pots such as a bright Red Blood Grass or Pieris japonica, with the lovely pink or red new growth. Both plants would look nice and bright against the fence. Think jasmine is wind tolerant too - that would smell lovely as you walked down the path..
I’m sure you’ll think of something that please you. :-)

Grasses would be a good idea. Think I would hide pots amongst gravel so it looks like they’re growing in it. Gravel is only half full at mo so was going to place plastic pots on top of current gravel and then fill in around it.

It does look good already Amsterdam, I have a lovely Jasmine growing against my shed, it flowered for the first time this year and the perfume was absolutely lovely, by using toughs you could change them for seasonal displays...I only empty mine when they need thinning out, I just add a few hands full of new fresh compost to the top each year...

It has lots of potential. How about a few spaced pots with the suggested Jasmine growing up and across to the house to form a sort of tunnel, not all the way to make it dark, but at intervals? I think the idea of pots or troughs a good one as you can have a full range from bulbs through to Dahlias to keep it bright.

I do like the idea of forming a tunnel but for now will stick with planting in pots in the gravel border. Great suggestion though.

I was also thinking grasses would look good. I have the Japanese blood grass (Imperata) mentioned by Kate IN gravel 8” wide. But it does disappear in winter ... you could have a look at www.knollgardens for grass ideas.
