Weeding Dandelions, Annie's tip of the day

The sun came out when I finished work yesterday so I decided to dig out and replace a large woody Erysimum ’Bowles’s Mauve’ in the front garden. It came out easily only to reveal two large Dandelions that had been hidden away. I normally like to hand weed but never manage to get all the root out with these and using weed killer is tricky when they are growing through other plants so this is what I do.
First hold back other plants with a fork
Cut a plastic bottle in half, here are two I prepared earlier!
Gather up the weed in your hand trimming off some of the leaf if they are very big and place the bottle over the top pushing it down firmly into the soil. Remove the lid and spray inside with your favourite weed killer then replace the lid.
Take the fork out and the plants hide the bottles. The bottle stops the rain washing away the weed killer and also starves the weed of oxygen so they die quickly.
I also use this method on my slope, it works well on hard to dig areas.

Thanks Annella, thats a brilliant idea and will be very useful on my raised bed at the bottom of my garden...

Clever girl! I used to like those touch weeder thingys but they took them off the market, they were very useful for that kind of weeding. I see that one of the firms is making one similar that doesn't resemble a lollipop this time. But like your idea very much it is so simple. :o)

What a clever idea!.... you better patent it quick!!
25 Apr, 2012
Do you think I could make my millions from empty soda water bottles Pam?!!
25 Apr, 2012
They say simple ideas are best.

Brilliant tip Annella, thanks for sharing. I always fail to get the whole root out and sure enough, each Spring the dandelions re-appear like an old favourite perennial! I'll try that, thanks.

total genius..
im sure something can be created and patented and a 'product' sold to garden centres..The Annella Range..a whole series of recycled products for gardening..
cool as!

Skip I said that to my Oh last year and he laughed his socks off!
Dawn the good thing is you can leave it in place and keep spraying if needs be till they are really gone forever ;O))
This works very well on pesky Bind weed too.

Smart thinking Annella.

How clever is that, I will pass that on to my gardening buddies....

A brilliant idea,Annella..so simple too..I have a few that I can never get out..I have a head start,as I have a collection of half bottles, which I usually use as mini cloches on tender new plants,in case of frost etc..cheers for this :o)
25 Apr, 2012
You are all very welcome, cheap, simple and it works ;O))
25 Apr, 2012
Wow how clever. I wont tell Basil (my tortoise) that you did that to his fav tipple, Lol.
25 Apr, 2012
Lol Willi.....That's another way of getting rid of your Dandelions!

Now who's a clever girl? BA Ideas have been looking for this sort of thing Annella. We operate a sort of Dragons Den thing...and we are willing to help you take this idea to the international market. We would of course replace the free tatty bottle with a desirable Cath Kidston style specially made weedaway..you like the name? Stick with me kid..we'll make a fortune:-))

Hello Ba ... I had to search my memory to think who had put this blog on ... finally remembered! ... so thanks again, Annella ... :o)
30 Apr, 2013
Annella, I'm awarding you the B.A. Genius Award:-))

Thank you very much Ba, that truly is an honour! Shirley I have lots of bottles on the go at the minute, the Dandelions are out in force :o)

I spotted a huge one growing up between Geraniums and a Rose at my Mums ... guess what I'll be doing tomorrow!

The odd dock here and dratted buttercups which manage to get right in between plants, and still the odd celandine which I've waved war on and almost exterminated. They had taken over my garden a few years ago and I only managed to clear most using advice from Seaburngirl :-)) I wonder if it's possible to put this blog on again? It's such a good idea and loads of people haven't seen it:-))
2 May, 2013
Ba - There is probably a way to re-post the blog easily ... just a shame I don't know what it is! Annella might do though ... hint, hint!
2 May, 2013
I think its a brilliant idea and the fact that we are looking at it again has brought it to the top on our news pages so possibly more members will check it out anyway...
2 May, 2013
Indeed, Lincs - I noticed a Bindweed shoot coming through the gravel in the GH today ... it now has a little plastic cover over it ... the Bindweed that is, not the GH lol!
