Heuchera problem

I asked a question about my Heuchera ‘Georgia Peach’ last week as the leaves had developed puckered spots and were dying off. I did as advised and removed all the leaves then sprayed the new growth with Provado but am still not sure about the cause. Here are a couple of photos of a leaf, any ideas as to what this is? Worthy1 suggested rust but that was without a photo of the problem.

It would be good to know for sure so I can cure the problem

This one is in the ground Cinders and was looking lovely until a couple of weeks ago. I left a few small new leaves on and will keep checking them.

My Berry Smoothie Heuchera was exactly like that last year. I cut the worst leaves off and sprayed it with Rosé Clear. It's now the picture of health. No idea what the cause was though! :)

Just googled heuchera leaf problems and the first to come up was heuchera rust from the RHS.....
Have a look at the photo Annie. :0(

think it'd be good for all Heuchera growers to know about, and beware of! looks a bit gruesome, very much hope someone comes up wiht an answer

I have just googled it too, and the description on Heucheraholics site sounds just like your leaves Annie, its Rust, which is a fungus.

I guess thats why rose clear helped

good luck on rescuing that one Annella, think you maybe will if you follow the advice. It looks horrendous doesn't it but sounds curable.

If that plant was a child i would say it has spots . Lol. Sorry. I do not know, but Bamboo was very good in plant diseases.

One of mine looked as though it was dying, the leaves were drying out, I removed it and planted it well away from my others, cut the leaves off and pleased to say it has now started to sprout new leaves, the drying leaves were covered in rust spots but it didn't have the grey on the underside..

My lime heuchera got infected with rust....Its called 'heuchera rust' and not so easy to eradicate Annella...You can find out all about it from RHS on line...

Do you think they are bugs of some sort underneath Moti?

nasty Anne, if its rust, its hard to get rid of but you must cut all bad leaves anne and burn, dont put in composs, im going off similar rust on Hollyhocks, also i think you have to be carefull it doesnt get into the soil around plant, hope you sort it out.

It is rust and quite a common problem on some Heucheras, cut it down turn it upside down and spray thoroughly, that usually works for us.......pain isn't it?
21 Jun, 2013
Worthy was right - it is Heuchera rust. Cut off badly affected leaves and spray with a suitable fungicide (Roseclear ultra works) making sure you spray till run off, beneath and on top of the leaves and stems.

Yeah, it's rust, and you need to spray it with a solution that contains Systhane...which rose clear does, but not sure about Provado. Some seem to be more susceptible than others, and the damp weather really encourages it. Keep your eye on Purple Ronnie, as it seems to get it quite easily too!

Can I just get this clear - You say rust, which the front of the leaf suggests but is the back of the leaf also rust?
22 Jun, 2013
Yeah, I think so Drc...it looks like insects, but yes, I think it is just rust. The fact it's so close-up makes it look really horrid doesn't it...almost like a scale insect.
22 Jun, 2013
Scale insect on back was what I thought, tho' not an expert.

Heuchera rust presents in exactly this way, showing spots below as well.

Thanks all for the information, having never seen it before I was convinced it was bugs and never thought to look up rust. I have purchased Roseclear and checked my other Heucheras which seem to be fine at the moment.

fingers crossed, Annella - let us know how it goes, please

I had this for the first time last year and lost one or two plants, but they hadn't really thrived anyway. The others were moved from their home, badly affected leaves removed, couldn't remove all until new ones came, given an airy position and fine now. I didn't spray with anything as I worry about its effect on any wild life. Some of my heucheras (not very near to affected ones, didn't succumb at all. These were in pots and among them were redstone falls and marmalade. I think it affects heucherellas and possibly tiarellas too. It's this flippin sodden weather:-(( When we get our weather back, I think the problem will clear. I haven't seen it so far this year, but am touching wood:-) I have seen mildew on my geums for the first time ever this year, and apparently I shouldn't have watered in the evening, but in the morning (so the leaves could dry in the sun) as cold and humidity are bad bedfellows, flippin weather:-)

That's interesting Ba and would make sense. I always thought watering early was not good because the sun can burn the leaves through the water droplets, bit like a magnifying glass :o))
28 Jun, 2013
Blimey, I'm wondering where you are then Ba that you can use the term 'so the leaves could dry in the sun'. What sun's that then? I've seen more moonlight recently than sun light...
28 Jun, 2013
That's a good point Bamboo Lol!!
28 Jun, 2013
I'm beginning to hope there's such a thing as a moontan, cos that's about as close as I might get this year...
28 Jun, 2013
I had an Australian tan earlier this year..........long gone now Lol! Let me know if it's worth laying under the full moon Bamboo :o))
28 Jun, 2013
Ha ha, shouldn't think it'd be much fun, well, not on me own anyway...
28 Jun, 2013
We did have sun, I remember it, big yellow thing in the sky. You two are moonstruck:-))
28 Jun, 2013
I'm trying to get a "seamless suntan" but as the sun only shows in my garden for a maximum of an hour a day (even when there's not a cloud in the sky), it's going to be a very slow process

I just had a few days in Jersey.......even they had been having cold wet weather but thankfully we saw the sun for all of the five days.....then got soaked walking across the tarmac from the aeroplane......
Its a delightful place though.....so is Jersey icecreammmm

I'm trying to get to Sark - small enough that even I could probably get round it all on foot (if I'm based somewhere in the middle!). the only drawback is the mention of "steel hills" - not sure how steep that is. lol maybe I'll find out soon

Wow, I have not seen that before, but it looks like an infestation of some kind of bug doesn't it. Are the new leaves any better Annella ? I think I would be inclined to dig it up and wash the whole thing in something like Provado or spray the roots, and replant in fresh compost.
