No Beetroot harvest

I went down to the allotment yesterday with the idea of pulling out the Beetroot Mixture I had planted some months ago as the last time I saw them, about two weeks ago, they were bolting.

I thought I’d sow some more seeds I still had left in their place. When I reached the raised bed in front of the greenhouse I saw that Gerry had beaten me to it, the plants were lying on the ground in front of the greenhouse!

I got out the hoe & cleaned up the ground of the last few weeds & to loosen the soil before sowing some more seed. Then I put down the 3 iron bars, once used for market stalls, to mark out the lines for the seeds, made a drill alongside each one & sowed more seeds, more thickly than I would normally like. Then to finish I watered the rows.

I hope they will germinate well this time after all the ground is much warmer & the days are also warmer & longer.

We will see!

what is an allotment?

22 Jun, 2016

I'm going to answer you with an extract from Wikipedia:

An allotment garden (British English),[1] often called simply an allotment, or a community garden (North America) is a plot of land made available for individual, non-commercial gardening or growing food plants. Such plots are formed by subdividing a piece of land into a few or up to several hundreds of land parcels that are assigned to individuals or families. Such parcels are cultivated individually, contrary to other community garden types where the entire area is tended collectively by a group of people.[2] In countries that do not use the term allotment (garden), a community garden can refer to individual small garden plots as well as to a single, large piece of land gardened collectively by a group of people. The term victory garden is also still sometimes used, especially when a community garden dates back to World War II or I.

I no longer have my own plot but help Gerry on his plot - which is where I'm working this year.

My Beetroot have been awful this year Balcony.....I did three sowings before any germinated so they are very behind. This was the same with carrots and parsnips. The only roots that germinated first time were Leeks. I think it's because the soil has been so wet and hasn't really warmed up.
I have now given up with my climbing French beans ....four sowings and not a single bean has germinated. I have never known that before...they are usually one of the easiest crops to grow from seed. I shall sow n the greenhouse next year!

Sorry to hear about your lack of success with your Beetroot & French beans, Paul, as well as your other root veg.

Perhaps we will both have better luck next time!

potatoes are the first root veg i have tried growing, have to see how they produce in the fall? i have never had any luck with beans or peas, now i stick to the basics , squash and tomatoes

Beans & Peas are most often considered the easiest veg to grow so it's rather surprising you are having problems! Tomatoes are usually considered a little more difficult. Potatoes are a crop that virtually grows all on its own with little for the gardener to do other than earth (hill) them up. You can start to harvest your "spuds", (British English slang for potato), shortly after they flower, depending on the variety as there are at least 3 categories, 1st Earlies, 2nd Earlies & Maincrop.

I hope you get a good harvest.:-))
