Pigeon Trouble - Bonkers birds - again!

I’m sure you’ll all remember the heatwave we had earlier this month, though it seems like a distant memory now, what with all this rain we’ve been having. (My son says its my fault – I ordered an aircon unit for the bedroom and, typically, it arrived 2 days after the heatwave finished – he reckons I’ve jinxed the weather and I reckon he might be right!)

Well, I left the balcony door open all night, along with two of the casement windows. What a mistake that turned out to be – I was woken at 6.15 a.m. by a terrific banging noise coming from that room and what I immediately recognised as the whooshing sound made by large wings fluttering. I got up and crept to the door of the room – unbelievable, there was a massive wood pigeon hurling himself against the central pane of glass (the only one that doesn’t open) trying to get out.

Well I’ll confess folks, I panicked. I don’t like to be in a confined space with anything flying around, and the bigger the thing is, the less I like it. I shut the door and thought about it for ten minutes or so, against the background noise of thumping and banging and oh, dear, smashing glass. The windowsill has several pieces of blue glass arranged along it – I peeped through – he’d dislodged two vases, a container full of marbles and a glass lamp – both the vases were lying shattered to pieces on the floor.

I managed to get a grip on myself and put on a winter coat with a hood, a pair of gloves, my winter boot slippers (not much fun in temperatures of eighty degrees, but I was desperate) and grabbed a large towel. I went carefully into the room – the pigeon, frantic to escape, managed to knock down the biggest paperweight in the universe and battered himself so much he finally fell to the floor and just sat there. I grabbed the opportunity to throw the towel over him (I had some idea I would grab him through the towel and take him outside). His response to that was to waddle out from under the towel, turn round and waddle towards the open door, hop out over the step and then sit on the ground to recover. Why he couldn’t have done that in the first place I don’t know.

So, there I am, standing in a hot, muggy room dressed in a winter coat, hood up, gloves on, winter boot slippers and my nightie underneath, surrounded by a sea of blue glass slivers, chips and chunks, marbles everywhere, and, of course, bird droppings all over the windowsill, the carpet, and even on a chair, at 6.30 in the morning. The pigeon, of course, was now much happier depositing yet another pile of droppings just outside the door and eventually flew off, apparently unharmed by his experience. Took me an hour to clean up, during which time the air took on a distinctly blue tinge to match nicely with the glass all over the carpet. I must say, he was large enough to have made a very decent roast ….

Me too! Made me chuckle but I suspect it didn't have the same effect on you! Hope you've recovered, I'd have panicked too.

Great story.... but, no photos ? Lol.
Where was your camera for the pic of the pigeon playing marbles, wearing winter boot slippers... or did I lose the thread of the plot somewhere...?
Thanks for this entertaining blog. :o)

Sorry, but I had a good chuckle as well! All the same I can imagine, a little, how you must have felt. It's bad enough when some insect gets in!

Glad you have recovered sufficiently to tell us about it in such an amusing way!

If you'd been there, Clarice, you'd have been the one dealing with the pigeon! And guys, its supposed to be funny, I'm glad you're all laughing - even I'm laughing, (if retrospectively).

Thanks for the laugh, great story, I've no idea what you look like, but now have a sort of cartoon image conjured up by you, so when questions are answered, knowledgeably, or comments made by you,..that's what I'll see. What is it with the pigeon family? They seem bent on self destruction, we've had doves launch themselves at our patio window leaving outlines like an angel and once a wood pigeon. The sound is so loud you look outside for a body, but they seem a robust race.

Hmm, not sure how good that image would be for my professional rep! I know what you mean about the shapes they leave on the window, had those too - and now I know why we all use the expression bird brained...

Oh Bamboo what a hilarious tale. You have really given me a good laugh!!! ........A sense of humour in the face of disaster is a good remedy. Sorry about the broken vases and the pigeon poo. I loved the bit about the biggest paperweight in the universe. That sorted the dozy pigeon. Thanks for sharing your story. I once collected a whole lot of Poole pottery. My husband had a going downstairs malfunction. He destroyed the lot with his bottom as he flew the last 3 or 4 steps and sat on a corner shelf. Don't ask me how...... I was accused of laughing, once I realised he was OK. Being more concerned about the pottery. I just needed to pick the bits away before he moved, and give him time to get over the shock.
