Frisky Erica carnea

Browsing the web just now, came across an article about Erica carnea, winter flowering heather. This is now, apparently, in very short supply because there’s been a huge increase in demand for this plant. Why, I hear you ask, well, dear reader, I will tell you.
The flowers of winter flowering heather contain a compound that is similar to viagra – one lady, when questioned at a branch of Wyevale, made the comment “he’s driving me mad, constantly out there tending his 20 heather plants, when he’s never shown a bit of interest in the garden before – I preferred it when he was less frisky”. Another branch of a well known garden centre reported that “men who were certainly old enough to know better” came to blows over the last tray of Erica plants.
This all started when some chap on an allotment, who is in the habit of making infusions of various plants to drink as a tea, tried Erica carnea and was reputedly “unable to leave his shed for over an hour”…
The scientists are saying its best steeped in alcohol, but “there seems to be some confusion about whether it’s best applied topically or swallowed”. I haven’t laughed so much in ages….

No shortage of Erica carnea round here if anyone wants any!!! I must say that I don't fancy eating or drinking it; I would still be picking bits out of my teeth long after any effects had passed. Very romantic.

Perhaps I could start a rumour that Japanese Anemones have such qualities as well! Then perhaps blokes would come ripping it out by the roots from my garden! It would save me having to clear some of it every autumn!!(where it has spread and swamped lots of other plants over the summer!)
27 Oct, 2009
LOL yes very Romantic Bulbh:) lol
27 Oct, 2009
I'd be terribly annoyed if anyone picked the flowers off any of my plants, whatever they wanted them for! After I'd read that article, I had to go and clean off the mascara that had run from crying with laughter...

27 Oct, 2009

Hate to put a damper on things but this was first published 10/15/2007
"The story of the "Viagra" plant comes from England and was an April fool's hoax published by the newspaper, The Independent. The story, which got lots of Internet mileage, goes like this: a 55-year-old furniture restorer who liked to make teas from different plants got an unexpected effect when he brewed up an infusion with blooms from winter-flowering heather. In its April 1, 2007 report The Independent quoted the fellow as saying that the effect was so immediate - and obvious - that he "had to stay in my potting shed for an hour or so before I could decently walk down the street." Sorry
27 Oct, 2009
Got my attention , Bamboo.
27 Oct, 2009
Don't be sorry, Drc, first time I've heard it, great urban myth, but it's b....y funny as stories go, so worth reporting on, I thought
27 Oct, 2009
Back to the conifers Bluespruce...;)
27 Oct, 2009
Or maybe its a heathland myth....
27 Oct, 2009
Hi Bamboo well it made me laugh when I first heard it and still does so thanks for that as we could do with a laugh on here lately.
27 Oct, 2009
I remember when i was a child people used to tie bunches of Heather to fronts of their Cars??? & Gypsiess used to sell it @ our Doors? Now im Confussed :(
27 Oct, 2009
We certainly could, everyone seems to be pretty uptight - I never realised it was a hoax, but you sort of have to guess it must be - I will confess to being very relieved that it's not true, viagra causes enough trouble without any extra help from something else....;-)))
27 Oct, 2009
I'm relaxed - and cool as a cucumber :0))
27 Oct, 2009
White heather is sold by Gypsies for good luck, outside Selfridges in Oxford street was a good site wonder if it still is?

28 Oct, 2009
Never had this Erica Carnea in my garden. Perhaps why not much activity round here. What was that about Japanese anemones??????
28 Oct, 2009
I wonder if this is why it's called "carnea"? Because it used to be tied onto car bonnet handles, of course! Remember, as a child, we used to have it tied there when we went on hols. :-))
28 Oct, 2009
A hoax?...damn, I've just brewed hubby a cuppa....he he
28 Oct, 2009
lol Dorjac, very dry humour there! Never mind Lincslass and Potty, sorry you're disappointed;-) Shame its a hoax, but the flaw was obvious - no allotmenteer would be crazy enough to brew tea from various plants that he knew nothing about, surely - but I've had a good laugh not just from the story itself, but also all your comments. And I've never heard of tying heather onto cars, or bonnets, come to that, was it for luck?
28 Oct, 2009
Sure was Bamboo....WAY back in the good old days when AA men used to salute on their motor-likes etc.....up here certainly we always had a bunch of heather tied to the grille of the car..an y es supposedly for luck....maybe of course just when we crossed over the border into England......EEEEK!!
28 Oct, 2009
lol - perhaps there was more superstition around in those days - I know there are still "pockets of resistance" but I think most people are less superstitious now.
28 Oct, 2009
I remember the Swiss spaghetti tree April Fools - I was amazed at just how many folk were taken in!
28 Oct, 2009
I'm learning! You lot are incorrigible.:))
29 Oct, 2009
Of course Ponty :-))
29 Oct, 2009
David - you're right! When I was a child, we went to Scotland on a family holiday - and we picked a bunch of heather for the front of the car! I think it was because we saw lots of other cars with them. :-))
Bamboo - I'm not at all sure that they aren't still - you still see people throw a tiny pinch of salt over their shoulder, and as for ladders in the streets! When did you see anyone walk under one, however awkward it would be to have to get round it?
Horseshoes above doors? Upside down, of course. They may be old, though, I suppose.
29 Oct, 2009
Don't know about everyone else, but I always make a point of walking under ladders, Spritz - unless I can see a loose paintpot at the top of them, that is!
29 Oct, 2009
I got married in Marylebone London and as my dad walked me to the ceremony a very blackened chimney sweep appeared in front of us he wished me luck and doffed his hat my dad told me it meant I would be lucky in a long marriage well its 32 years on 5th November.
29 Oct, 2009
Thanks, Spritz! Yes, this was in the mid 60s, roadside "entrepreneurs" even tried to sell sprigs of heather to tourists, and the "done thing" was to tie them with attached ribbons to car bonnet handles, or radiator grilles, if you didn't have a "handle", lol!). Of course, my Dad, being not just a Scot, but a Fifer to the core, soon learned that we could drive for miles and pick our own for free!!! Nowadays, I liken this to driving 30 miles between all the supermarkets to buy all my groceries at the cheapest "we beat them" advertised prices - ignoring the cost in fuel!!
Must say, last time I saw lucky white heather sprigs, with unidentifiable tartan bow, was outside Harrods, by a non-English speaker, in August 2008!!!
If anyone really wants some, e-mail will be supplied upon request. :-D
31 Oct, 2009
From my own observations I would say that white heather is becoming more common on the hills. Perhaps because people don't pick it anymore?
31 Oct, 2009
I have just caught up with this hilarious blog!
Guess what I put on my photos recently..............!!
Must go and make the tea.................
