The fern below is Polystichum Setiferum( least thats what i think it is) Long lived evergreen,so good value.
My father collected from a roadside in the Cotswold’s I believe some time in the 1950s not later as I have had it ever since 1959 when i moved to this house.
You can wire a leaf to the ground sprinkle some sand around it and in a couple of months you have dozens of baby ferns.Do you want some I will layer one down if you do,probably early summer if you do.
Each little leaflet is a potential plant
I could sell them on E bay.Now there is a thought lol.

BJS If you are kind enough to do this for everyone on the list it's going to cost you a lot in postage I wonder if when the time comes if it would be a good idea for those people invloved if they each sent you a pre addressed stamped envelope it would make it so much easier for you ......... what do other people think ?
14 Jan, 2012
Of course, it goes without saying, but I'm going to have a bit of a problem with an s.a.e.! Maybe you should cross me off your list. :-(((( Sigh! I was so looking forward to Lulu's snack, too.
14 Jan, 2012
Perhaps we should wait for BJS to answer Gat I might have spoken out of turn I was thinking of him and trying to make it easier for him .......
14 Jan, 2012
Right everyone I will try and root them for you,it is normally very easy( but you know sods law)anything can happen with plants,so we are talking some months away,I will keep all of your names and when they are rooted find out what postage will cost.
Amy yes they are happy on dry banks in fact they grow in most areas of my garden which has both deep shade and sun
Gattina we dont let oceans get in the way of deliveries,do we Alex!
Scottish will have to root them quick, not sure I want to except Euros.LOL
And Franny don't want any trouble makers you will have one same as the rest.
Terratoonie yes any where other than underground.
Lulu no problem send Jamie for his mornig walk to deliver yours, although you are supposed to be visiting me !
Driad wont forget, you are on the list
Brian
PS I have not forgotten Paul he knows the score

14 Jan, 2012

14 Jan, 2012

... otherwise it will cost you a fortune !!!
14 Jan, 2012
Yep, you are next due a visit!!
14 Jan, 2012
Oh Bjs, Darling, it isn't the oceans that are the problem, it's the Italian postal service.... Don't worry, by the way, we still have a British bank account and a envelope full of GB stamps, no-one need accept Euros, unless they fancy papering the walls, that is.......
14 Jan, 2012
Oceans to us is like crossing a road. ;o)))
By the way Bjs, my double snowdrops have appeared....pictures soon.
14 Jan, 2012
Would carrier pigeons manage the task ? (First find your carrier pigeon ).
14 Jan, 2012
I wont trouble you for a baby fern Bjs but it is a very interesting fern.
14 Jan, 2012
Thanks Brian we shall look forward to seeing their progress later in the year :o)
15 Jan, 2012
So does it mean that if I take one leaf at the beginning of the summer and cover it with layer of soil, it will grow in many new plants next year?
15 Jan, 2012
Katarina
I have had to refer to my bible on ferns to answer this for you, although i have about 40 different varieties in the garden this is the only one i see make babies.
So the book says there are several other Polystichum that make babies but Setiferum the one I have is the most reliable for rooting.some other Ferns produce eggs and spores on the under side of the leaves they can be layered down and provided they have been fertilised and are kept damp they will make new plants.the book suggests polythene sheet over them but leaving space for air.Have never tried it not sure if it would be worth while, bit like men up trees.lol
If you are into Ferns have alook at my Blog on them Shades of green and copper 23 june 2011 this is most of the ones i have in the garden
15 Jan, 2012
LOL. Thank you. The picture on the bottom of this blog is worth of a catalogue :)
15 Jan, 2012
Bjs....just catching up - have been offline whilst I get my garden sorted after the winds!!
I won't be paying in Euros...we better not join that!!!! :))))
Joking aside....you won't need to root one for me Bjs. My local nursery has 12 different Polystichums, so I may well get one similar. Thanks x
22 Jan, 2012
Well, Scottish, if Euro or British pound, I do not think it matters in the global economic crisis. I think, Bjs, that bartel businees will be more profitable :)
23 Jan, 2012
Scotish OK,thats a good selection for one nursery.
23 Jan, 2012
