Another tip for Pots....all those bags !!.

Some of you may already do this, but in anticipation of some more hot weather, and maybe, lack of rainwater..when preparing pots and tubs,I save all my old compost bags,to line them first. They need to be turned inside out,and cut in strips ,wide enough to come higher than the pot.The black side of the strips face outwards.I also cut a circle to fit in the bottom, with holes in for drainage, plus whatever material you use in the bottom, such as crocks or polystyrene packaging. This helps to stop heat burning the roots, and conserves moisture…especially good with Tomato’s,and other plants ,that need plenty of water. After adding the compost, the liner will sink down a bit,and then you cut the excess off,so it doesn’t look unsightly.I have done this for a few years now,and found it to be helpful, especially if you aren’t home to keep up to the watering.I don’t bother with things like Pelargoniums,as they can cope OK…I know it sounds a bit of a faff, but it works well for me…and another bit of recycling..:o)

Blimey, that was quick :o) Glad you found it helpful,Kf..it really does work.I forgot to say, that it needs to overlap inside as well..or the compost gets in between the pot and the liner...messy ! ..Lol.

Thanks for this bloomer. I have very deep hanging baskets and I used polystyrene chippings to fill the bottom of them to save weight and waste.

They are so useful, aren't they,Karen?,with being so lightweight...I never throw anything like that away..lots still in the loft..I suppose when they are used up,I will have to buy another washer,TV,etc etc..to get some more ! Lol.

Thanks for the advice. Do you do it with plastic and teracota pots or just the plastic ones ? I know they can get very hot, while teracota ones are cooler
