Austrian Mountains (2) Mooserboden Dam

If any GoYers ever go to this area of Austria then the Mooserboden Dam is a MUST visit place. It is a man made lake behind the Kitzsteinhorn mountain at 2,000m above sea level and constructed to supply the hydro-electric scheme in the valley. To construct the dam they had to build a road up and through the hillside and the electricity company now run a bus service up the road to take tourists to the dam, 1000m of ascent.

The lake is surrounded by mountain peaks and glaciers come down almost to the water.

Unfortuantely the sky was overcast and the pictures of the mountains are rather flat, no pun intended. Not so the flowers though, they were amazing.

Anemone narcissiflora

Pulsatilla alpina

Soldanella alpina ‘Snow Bell’

All the time we were at Mooserboden we were walking on levelish paths like this and all of the flowers pictured here were in close proximity to the paths. A disabled person could have seen some of the flowers in the area around the head of the dam – there are the usual restraunt and gift shop facilities in this area. (Ugh, I missed uploading the picture and it is now the one at the bottom of the blog.)

Cerastium uniflorum

Crocus vernus albiflorus

All of the above are good garden plants and should be available from speciaist nurseries. I am hoping that this Gentian is readily available as it is a ‘must have’ plant for me. It was a beauty.

Gentiana punctata ‘Spotted Gentian’

Gentiana punctata ‘Spotted Gentian’

This one is not a garden plant, spectacular as it is, The Lousewort (poor thing, with a name like that) is parasitic on other plants and I have not heard of it being grown in gardens.

Pedicularis recutita ‘Beakless Red Lousewort’
