Trip to France

I have been away for a week visiting a friend who lives in France. Eight years ago she and her OH bought a very old farmhouse and some land at Lavaguayon, Haute Vienne, in France, in a very dilapidated state, and they have now made it into a lovely home and garden. One or two of you may have noticed a friend on here called Lavaguayon, she has not been very busy on this site, but I think I may have persuaded her to do more and include a few pictures…. anyhow, I spent a lovely week there with my friend Alan. It is his sister, so we know them well !! We had a relaxing week really as it is out in the sticks so to speak, but on the Sunday we spent a day in a little village called St.Jean le Cole, where they were holding a flower festival. All the houses and hedges were decorated with flowers, sometimes artificial ones, but very effective, and the flowers, the roses, and everything else were beautiful. It was purgatory not being able to buy and bring things home !! But I did take lots of pictures, so I hope you will enjoy looking at them, and at the end I will put on a couple of pictures of my friends house.

Sorry, think I put this on twice. Young Baobob trees.

Glad you enjoyed :)
Did you SEE all those LOVELY CACTI :o) I would have had to smuggle a few home in my case lol
What a lovely house you stayed in. Nice to have a veranda.
I remember learning about those boabab trees in school ! many years ago ...

Thanks Hywel, those cacti were great. I thought of you and Paulsgarden when I saw them. Don't tell, but I did smuggle a yellow one. The house was lovely, such character, but they are putting it on the market, so dont know if I will get to go there again.
My friend did buy a baobob tree, so fascinating.

That looks so lovely. The French really do know how to live and how to 'do' local community don't they....wonderful! The house looks absolutely gorgeous too. Well done your friends....they must have worked really hard to get it up to scratch. I really admire people who are brave enough to take that on in a different country, and I just love France. Bliss!

I agree with you Karen, and they did work hard too. It has a lot of character and a lovely feel about it. I like France too, and if I were younger...... But this little hamlet was lovely and a very old chateau, derelict, but with lots of history, and the roads are so quiet you hardly meet a car when you go out ! As you say, Bliss.

Ah, those fabulous Roses, Cinders, if only we had scratch & sniff screens! I echo Karen's comments about your friends moving to another country as the laws, building rules & regs. are so different to ours, not to mention the language to learn! Pleased you had a lovely time there. : o ))

Thanks Shirley, I was thinking the same thing when I put the roses on, you can almost smell them can't you.

Beautiful blog Cinders and lovely displays of flowers cute little house there so pretty, one thing I noticed when I went there is never rubbish on the roads, streets like here and depressing sight to see when I returned.

Thanks Sandra, yes I suggested she put you down as a favourite, so she got something to follow up on. I hope she gets busy now on here. Not very bright here this morning, probably just as well - I might get some work done indoors !!

16 May, 2011

Thats fine,Cinders..I haven't replied yet,but I will now..:o)
hope you got your jobs done today..its been so cold and very windy here..went to the Dentist, nipped into town for euro's,,and that's about it..oh,and ventured out to the compost bin! Lol.

16 May, 2011

Well I didnt get a lot of work done indoors after all, did some ironing, but ventured outside and didnt come back in till lunchtime. Then shopping, packed a parcel up and just generally pottered around doing odd jobs. I have dentist in the morning and haircut, so don't expect I shall feel like work after that !! Its windy and chilly here. Need a cardy on.

Lovely photos Cinders, I`m glad that you had a lovely stay in France. I would have been itching to bring plants home too, especially some of those gorgeous roses! :o)

I know. They were lovely, and the scent was fabulous.
Thanks for your nice comments.

Hi Cinderella...I'm playing catchup as usual...Really glad you enjoyed your break in France...This is our 9th year here in the Vienne...Your friends house looks really homely. My H and I know the BST that goes into renovating an old building...wouldn't like to do it again...but glad we had the experience...Gorgeous photos, the French love their Roses...and its a real treat to see the Villages decorated...lovely country, we feel blessed to be here....

17 May, 2011

Thanks Crissue, I didnt realise that you were in the Vienne. Do you know the area where I stayed? It was near Rochechouart. I couldnt believe how quiet the roads were, hardly any traffic. Loved it. If I were younger.....

17 May, 2011

No sadly I don't, but there are many such Villages all over, I've marked it for H on the map and possibly on our Caravanning trips we may get there or there abouts...You don't have to be young to enjoy this way of life...maybe if we had been younger when we started out, we possibly would have found it too quiet...now its bliss...and problems of the world seem a million miles away....

18 May, 2011

Sounds idyllic. But I don't think I could do it on my own now, and not speaking the language would be a huge drawback too. So, in my dreams.... will just have to visit now and then.

Wonderful pictures of my favourite Country, we nearly went to live there 4 years ago, would still buy a house there if we had the money, keep this one here and spend 6 months in France, it looks as if you had a thoroughly enjoyable time lucky you.

25 May, 2011

I did, Dd. A lot of people do that, six months here and six months there. In the little community that my friends are in, about half the people do that, and my friends look after their places for them while they are back in UK.

26 May, 2011

Sound good to me.....

26 May, 2011

Love this, gone on my favs. I would live there too if my OH was well. We did talk about it some years ago and I started learning the language, ( he was already something of a linguist) but it was not to be. They even allow dogs in lots of places too. I do get a little annoyed when I hear the whole french nation accused of being unfriendly and rude! I have only met friendly, kind, polite people there:-))

25 Jun, 2011

Thanks Ba. I found it to be a friendly place, although being out in the wilds, we didnt actually get to meet a lot of french people. It was mostly english people living in the little commune, and only a handful of french. You just felt in a different world. Very quiet on the roads too.

Sigh........:-)
