My New Garden - First Year
12 comments
Last night I looked back again at the first year of my new Courtyard-style garden. I have been so happy with how it grew in spite of our dreadfully heavy clay soil. I thought you might like to look back with me. I shan’t bore you with the build shots. We’ll get straight to May after the initial planting…..
I’m looking forward so much to this new growing season. I’ve been planting all through the dormant season…bulbs, trees, more pots. Most recently I added a Pineapple Broom in the sunny corner. There should be a lot more height this year. My latest potted addition is a dwarf Apricot, which brings the tally of fruit trees to 11! All dwarf of course. I always wanted my garden to be productive as well as pretty.
I’ve also been working on the front garden. Last week I removed all of the grassy plants left by the builder and I’m waiting for a delivery of six more Molly’s White Hellebores. It’s a favourite of mine as it blooms early and has tinges of red which will compliment the brick work. Once they are in I’ll show progress at the front. So much to look forward to and enjoy in 2025!

I can't believe how quickly it has all grown and more plants to go in! How have you got the room! lol

Thanks SBG. I will! It’s a tricky garden to photograph because of all the hard landscaping, but I’ll get better with time!
Isn’t it amazing Rose? Here in the South you plant stuff and it’s growing the same day! In Scotland you plant stuff and wait to see if it will recover from the shock! lol!

Absolutely lovely. You seem to have been very clever with your colour combinations. I like the border with the purple Salvias, the bed with the bird bath & the Euphorbias & the yellow Cosmos together. Look forward to any future photos. I hope everything survives the winter frosts for you. I’ve had a few nice Euphorbias in the past & they just succumbed to cold weather, so I’m stuck with E characias,
Good job I like it!

Lovely comment Feverfew. Thank you. I have had a few things knocked back by the cold. Luckily the courtyard is quite sheltered and I’m hoping most will recover.

I've really enjoyed seeing your pics over the last year Karen. You've really worked hard and the result is a stunning courtyard garden. It's a joy to see...

That's a very different layout from the norm! Really interesting and very attractive. I like the way the paths give you lots of small areas to plant up as mini themed gardens and you got some lovely combinations of colour and shape.Wish I had your imagination! I'm looking forward to seeing more of your new garden!

your garden does look brilliant Karen. I hope you will do similar photos of these in 2025 so we can see what it looks like then too.
Pleanty of fruit trees is always a bonus.
