The Garden Community for Garden Lovers

Anniversary

It’s exactly a year ago today that I received the keys to our new home in Dorset. Scott was in Dundee loading our furniture into the van from Storage and preparing to drive the 500 miles south with it.

The garden is much younger of course, as we didn’t begin planting until May.

I’ve been looking back at photos of the old garden. I can’t let go of them quite yet. It was such a labour of love and a huge investment of money, my body and time. But mostly of love.

This new garden is totally different. Yes, we have invested a lot of cash and energy in getting what I dreamed up, and that continues. But the time and energy it takes from me is vastly diminished. I have even started as a volunteer at Shaftesbury Abbey, which will open up a whole new interest for me, and help me get more integrated into our wonderful local community. I am excited for this.

My passion for my garden has not lessened though, and I am still dreaming and planting. This week it has been perennial wallflowers, hellebores and a winter-flowering Cherry tree. Today I’ve ordered Asters for the autumn, some more Astrantias (such incredible plants) and some Tiarellas for the spring. I tend to go for perennials that don’t need a lot of care and that flower over a long period.

This month is a tough one, but perhaps easier than January as at least we now have the snowdrops. Here in Shaftesbury we have a snowdrop festival. There was a specialist sale in the town hall today (I didn’t make it), there is an art exhibition on snowdrop theme, we have many activities and it all ends with a snowdrop lantern parade through the town. Snowdrops are big in Shaftesbury!

Thanks for looking in to my little rambling blog!

My original plan for the new garden…

Moving in day…

Waiting to get started….

A dream is realised

In just a few months we achieved a beautiful haven

And hopefully this year the birds will come to visit

It's amazing how your garden has come together in just a year Karen. And you are still squeezing more plants in!
I am pleased I am not the only one! lol

To be honest Rose, I removed a few that just weren’t working, and that gave me an opportunity to do better. The shrubby salvias and some of the Penstemons are out. Replaced with more Astrantias, hellebores etc. I found a lovely plant which is a cross between a hollyhock and a shrubby mallow. I can’t wait to see those! There are still a few gaps, but I think I’ll have a better idea by June. The wet heavy clay is a big challenge!

I felt the same way about my old house and garden after we moved here. I missed so many things about them both but it was exciting moving somewhere that was a completely different environment.

You've already worked wonders with your new back garden.

Congratulation on your accomplishment Karen. You did an amazing job in a year.

Some Salvias don't do well in my garden Karen, so have taken them out and then Janey gave me two cuttings from one of hers when we met up, so will put them in the raised bed and hopefully will do well in there.

Thank you Klahanie. I really think we did!

Hi Rose…it’s the wind. The greggii (shrubby) ones are very brittle, so they snap and/or get flattened and grow horizontally. So I realised it’s just too windy here at the top of the hill. The nemorosa and verticillata are much stronger. Ugliginosa ‘African Skies’ grew too well to be honest. It’s a bit of a monster. Too big for here. Beautiful though.

Oh my word Karen, where has the time gone? Honestly, it doesn't seem a year ago that you moved in and you have both worked so hard to create this wonderful space.

Have your neighbours been planting too? Once the estate has shrubs and trees growing you will see the wildlife appearing.

I wish you well with your volunteering ... :o)

Hi Shirley. Next door haven’t done anything to their garden yet. Behind us haven’t planted anything tall. It’s all down to us! I am waiting for delivery of a Eucalyptus pauciflora. That should fill another gap. We are so lucky that we don’t have any houses at the front. The front garden will be more private than the back! lol!
