Snowdrops at the "Haven"

I, finally, managed, for the first time since late November, to revisit my other garden, this week.

I headed straight for the walk I created last summer along the stream embankment. GOY member Amy had very kindly sent me some 67 snowdrop bulbs from her garden, for this area, so I was really pleased to see them all in flower.

It was also good to see that the 200 mixed narcissus bulbs I planted here in Autumn have taken. I’d had a few concerns that the steep banking might have eroded with the heavy snow and ice we had over winter. The only casualties, however, seem to have been two dead trees which, M’lady told me, collapsed under the weight of the snow, fell into the stream, and were washed away.

I’m looking forward to the colourful display in a couple of weeks, or so.

Some colour, however, is currently being provided by crocus and primulas.

The robin and tit nestboxes I put up here do not, unfortunately, seem to have tenants, although the entrance hole in the tit nestbox shows signs of having been worked upon.

I wonder whether this potential resident was just waiting for me to leave, before viewing the property?

Elsewhere in the gardens, I found some older clumps of snowdrops.

I think that they would benefit from being divided, so will do this when the flowers have gone over, and re-locate them alongside Amy’s snowdrops, down by the stream.

Squire retired on Friday, and has said that he will be happy to see to all the grass cutting and hedge trimming, freeing me up to concentrate on the more exciting jobs, such as the creation of a raised pond, developing borders and the stream embankment, and starting up an “allotment” area, so am really looking forward to moving back into my “HQ” this week, and to another great season at “The Haven”.

My HQ, the garage/toolshed under the blue spruce.

:-))

I've been watching for you to blog about your return to the Haven.

I thought it was daffs you'd planted but now realize it was snowdrops and narcissus....nice to see them growing nicely on the riverbank.

You've got a busy time ahead with all the plans...nice to be relieved of your grass cutting responsibilities in favour of doing more creative work at The Haven. :)

Lovley blog, not sure where or what the Haven is, I have not been a member for long, but it looks a very nice place to be.

You've not been out this w/e David, surely! It's been a batten down the hatches job up here.
The Haven looks great, though.

Love it David, nice to see dear Amy's snowdrops are doing well for you too

Certainly haven't, Bulbaholic! Driving home from work Friday night through a blizzard, I thought "Here we go, again". My own garden disappeared under a snow blanket once again, but, by this evening, it has almost totally melted. Was at "The Haven" on Wednesday, and planning to visit again, tomorrow, to make a new start. :-)

Must admit, Whistonlass, to being relieved to be relieved of the grass-cutting, as it takes a few hours, and am only too happy to let Squire attend to his beloved striped lawn, lol! Narcissus/daffodil - I admit to switching between both without thinking, but should always call them Narcissus, of course! :-)

Isn't it great to be able to be out there again, Cristina? I can just imagine your lovely garden bursting into new life, again! :-)

Lots of very enjoyable work, however, Driad! :-)

Hi Teds! "The Haven" is the garden of friends of mine, who live out in the countryside. They asked me to take it on in May last year, as it was very neglected and overgrown. It got christened "The Haven" by a fellow Goy member soon afterwards, and the name has stuck!
You would have to look back at my blogs from last year to see how it developed since then. :-)

Isn't Amy wondeful, Dawn? I was gobsmacked when I got her parcel, which also contained foxglove, cranesbill and violets, for this area. I also got seed of many lovely waterside perennials from Lori in Canada! Have just sown some of these in trays. :-)

Its great to see The Haven again David and I`m really looking forward to seeing all your new plans coming to life, its obvious what you have already cleared and planted is looking good and you must be really pleased with what you have achieved so far.
Your photographs are lovely and I know this might sound a bit cheeky of me to ask but did you not take any long distance ones of your lovely walk alongside the water?
Hope the weather is good for you and that you enjoy this year in both your gardens.......

It is really good, Lincslass, to see the major bulb-planting producing results. of course, you are not "cheeky" in the slightest, lol! I did take a few pics of amost the whole length of the waterside walk, but nothing much showed up clearly enough, to show. Will be able to give you a better picture when all the narcissus/daffs are in bloom, hopefully.

Snow has returned here, again, but am sure that this will be for the last time, this year. Hope that you have a fantastic gardening season, too! :-))

We will continue to be "pirates" this year, Lincslass, and have a "plunder" shopping list at the ready. "Fortune" and "Golden Ducat" Narcissus varieties peeking up in our treasure chest, now. Must find a new avataaarrrggh, methinks, for this year. Am 'eartily seasick of seeing me looking like this. LOL! :-))

Latest snow, at least here, was a mere 24-hr wonder, so had a very productive day at "The Haven" today, I must say. And "Squire", now being a "Gentleman of Leisure", laid on a wonderful breakfast, and lunch!! :-))

14 Mar, 2011

Thank You very Much, Amy!! Will look forward to getting them. So glad that you got your trip to Kew! :-))

15 Mar, 2011

great blog and well done on all the hard work youve put in..excellent photos and the bulbs look stunning..i hope the steep bank part looks great when everything is out..thanks for sharing

Oh David, those Snowdrops look so pretty along the bank. Well done you on planting them. I hope 'The Squire' doesn't keep you too long at the table! Lovely to see 'The Haven' once again and look forward to seeing pics of the Narcissus. : o ))

15 Mar, 2011

Hope you were not too bored reading them, Teds!! :-))

So nice to have something to report on, again, Yorkshire :-))

I'm hoping for a great burst of colour on that banking, Skip! Many Thanks! ;-))

Thank You, Shirley! "Squire", very fittingly, for our own "pirates" themed garden, was a former "sea cook" (Long John Silver - get it?), and I love food, and cooking, too. Yes, breaks have the potential to be rather prolonged, and every "management decision" seems to require a "toast". Hmmmm...... wonder why I always have a spirit level in the car.....and is that banking really so steep? Why are those daffs growing sideways? And can I even visualise the verticality of the wood, for the trees?:-D)

Sounds as though you needed crampons for steadying yourself whilst planting the bulbs! Can you believe my first 3 Daffs to flower are almost over now! No idea why they were out so early. No worries, plenty more in bud. : o )

16 Mar, 2011

I can believe it, Shirley! Snowdrops, here, seemed to go over far quicker than usual. Last year, for me, seemed to be a Hydrangea year, as they seemed to bloom for far much longer, and were extraordinarily colourful. Now, our daffs seem, to me, to be a bit behind, compared to last year. Glad that you have had some, and have more to bloom! As I am ageing, cannot remember whether I wore the crampons when I planted those bulbs.....and did i really stick them in, sideways, after lunch? :-))

Hi David, Amy is wonderful, bet she's blushing, lol. I have some wonderful plants thanks to Amy. Let me know how you get on with the waterside perennial seeds, as this is something I'm interested in to fill the banks of my pond, I've tried water marigold and pickerel weed but sadly failed, I will be interested to see if your seeds germinate :-)

17 Mar, 2011

Glad to see you back in action David. The Haven is looking great. At this rate you will be able to open for the yellow book. It is incredible what you have achieved in such a short time. I'm glad to hear you are to be relieved of your grass and hedgecutting duties and in the next installment can you tell us what happened to the old caravan.

19 Mar, 2011

Amy recently sent some more wonderful plants, dawnsaunt (she will be blushing, now, lol). Will report on the progress of Lori's seeds. :-)

Hi Scotsgran! The caravan was finally dismanteld, safely, and removed end of last gardening season. Am sure that I put pics in an earlier blog, but, no matter. The area it occupied is, right now, the "focus of attention", and will be constructing a small pool there on Friday. :-)

lovely photos david and its such a lovely garden to spend time in, snowdrops are so pretty to, would love a streambank in my garden :o))

Have just found this blog David, the snowdrops are gorgeous, I agree they would benefit from division, should be a good display in the new year.

4 Nov, 2011

Hope so, Grandmage! Had been thinking of the blog "Spring Colour at The Haven" with the Narcissus.

I so enjoyed seeing the Snowdrop bulbs Amy sent flower. Will leave these to develop, but did divide the overgrown clumps found elsewhere, so looking forward to seeing them all again, by the stream. The Snowdrop is a personal, and close family, favourite. :-)

Actually it is ours too! :~)
