Thought this may be interesting as it was to me, found this article whilst looking through some magazines, I didnt realise you could do this to your Stipa Gigantea in late winter.

Yes me and OH thought it looked like a hedgehog too steragram :)
Hywel, I'm not too sure about that but I will be doing this as its got quite big and hope it works, I know with miscanthus I cut that back at the same time early spring before new growth :))

I might try it with the few grasses I've got, although they are only small ones.
