Last year I wrote about our visit to Herstmonceux castle East Sussex – well today we went back to take some pics. It has large gardens round a brick built 15th century moated castle it was the home of the British observatory till 1990. Then the whole thing was bought to be turned into hotel and golf club fortunately the developers went bust and a Mrs and Mrs Bader saw it advertised for sale on a nostalgic bus ride through East Sussex. Alfred Bader bought it and donated it to his old university and it now belongs to Queens University Ontario Canada and is used for worldwide students and the old observatory is now a science centre. Alfred Bader had passed through England as an escapee from the Germans in the late 1930’s apparently we sent a lots of Jewish refugees to Canada during that time.
The roses were lovely today and the gardens are a setting for sculptures from Zimbabwe of which we fell in love with many. I will put them on another blog.

Brings back many happy memories of when I used to play in the grounds. Thank you for putting this on and for letting me know about it - will try and get down next summer and visit some relatives I haven't seen for a while.

It must be strange when you go there to walk in your granddads foot steps knowing he planted and cared for so much of it Bren. I have 3 more blogs from there you might like such as the 'An avenue of Sweet chestnut circa 1700 at Herstmonceux Castle' and the Sundial one both of which your grandfather would have known.

When I visit these places I often wonder what life would have been like when they were first built. Smashing photos and great blog Drc. :o)
