I was thrilled to see a ‘Painted lady’ Butterfly in my garden yesterday. I understand this is the first time they have been seen in the UK since 2009.
The Big Butterfly count RSPB is Friday 19 July to Sunday 11 August this year so glad I have not done it yet.

I read they're at a ten year high especially across Scotland. I've been getting the most butterflies I've seen this year on the buddleias, a nice mixture too.
I've been trying to grab photos but they're elusive little beggars 😄, hopefully I'll get plenty more chances to get better shots

I have seen two painted ladies so far, hoping for more! Last time they came we had great drifts of them - very impressive, so hoping it might happen again.
In general though not many other butterflies, even small whites are few and far between.

We saw our first one as well, got a dodgy photo but enough to identify it. Scotland had hundreds apparently so I think we got some from up there. Lots of white ones in the garden but for us it is still early, mid August is normally the busiest time.

I saw my first Peacock butterfly of the year yesterday. The Sedum Spectabile Herbstfreude often attracts them, so I am hoping to see more. I have seen Painted Ladies, and there were lots of those in Cromarty last week. We have had quite a few white ones, also some small blue ones. I hope to see more. I have also just noticed that there is a wren nesting in the Boston Ivy on our house back wall. I thought I must be mistaken so late in the year but, on checking, I read that birds nest right up until August. I hadn’t realised that. There were lots of young seagulls around in Cromarty and the noise from the adults was extremely loud, they were shrieking even right through the night!

I have spotted up to three Painted Ladies feeding on the buddleia in our garden near Lincoln, over the last few days. Not aware of seeing them before, lovely to see! Also seen a few more Peacocks, but generally far less of other butterflies, such as Tortoiseshell, so that's a shame. It has seemed a bumper year for lots of types of bumble bees though, lots of buzzing in the borders!

Painted Ladies migrate here from Africa, and for some strange reason come in their thousands every ten years. In 2009 there were more in the UK than had ever been seen before. Fascinating creatures 🙂.
