Away for a while

I have to be absent from GOY for some time as I am having a Whipple procedure (which is removing duodenum with most of my pancreas and a bit of the stomach etc) for cancer next Tuesday only 20 hospitals in the UK do this op so I have to be a fair distance from home which is hard for the family.
I have a 75% chance of making the first 2 weeks postop. Having been a chemotherapy sister for many years I am quite ok with this as at 71 I feel lucky not to have got it earlier as so many do.
Hopefully I will be in touch in the future take care everyone
and best wishes Denise.

Hi Denise, I'm so sorry you will have to undergo such drastic surgery, and so far away from your family as well.
Wishing you all the very best, for a successful outcome, and a swift recovery, best wishes Derek.

Will be thinking of you on Tuesday and to you, your surgeon, carers and family every best wish from every guardian angel floating about out there. Keep a positive attitude, threaten the surgeon like I did with coming back to haunt him, if he didn't pull you through (mine op was very, very minor) and dream away until the Spring!

Wishing you all the best with your operation and hope that you make a good recovery. I have nothing but respect and admiration for all the teams that work in chemotherapy and oncology and as you will know from your own experience as a chemo sister, you make a very difficult time a lot more bearable. Once again all the very best.

Hi Denise, I’m very sorry I missed your blog - not sure why?
I was off for a couple of weeks due to being bedded down with covid in February.
How are you? I’m sorry to hear you’ve been through a very traumatic, scary time. It’s hard enough for you without all this virus stuff going on too. I recall you mentioning your operation before? I appreciate it must have been an absolutely terrifying thing to undergo and the after effects and outcomes. As you said, being a chemotherapy sister before will give you that knowledge of what to ‘expect’ and the treatment plan ahead. When I moved to east Yorkshire in the late 90s, my first job was as a staff nurse on colorectal, we had our chemo nurses based on the ward. It was a fantastic ward.
I do hope you are doing ok, Denise. Sending my belated best wishes.

Thanks Kate and Paul, I had my year check CT scans and bloods in January with no sign of any cancer. But for some weeks now I am very tired and very short of breath with swollen feet.
Told GP last week, heart ECG and was fine now awaiting a chest Xray very scared but do not really think I am in trouble? so fingers crossed. The reason for delay is my husband is very ill and I wonted to get that sorted first.
28 Mar, 2021
Oh Denise, you’ve really been through the mill! I’m really sorry to hear that your husband is also very ill too.
I am pleased your ECG was fine. Often with swollen feet, breathlessness and fatigue, it can be heart related. I’m sure you’re trying to keep your feet elevated, but, it must be difficult as your priority right now is looking after your husband. When and where you can, keep your feet up quite high and get some rest too. You maybe need some more blood tests too, ? Different ones from January.
Hoping you get your CXR soon. Sending you my best wishes for you and your husband xxx

Thanks Kate, I did have more blood tests on Thursday.

Thanks Paul
