Sadly this afternoon Eastbourne pier caught fire. This is the third pier in Sussex to catch fire in the last decade, Brighton pier was destroyed in 2003 and in 2010 Hastings pier was also destroyed by fire.
The Eastbourne fire is still burning but hopefully this pier which opened in 1870 and one of the finest on the south coast will survive although the large 2 storey building at the front is destroyed only about one third of its length is on fire.
We do love pour piers and hopefully all three will eventually rise from the ashes.

Hi Drc, just seen this on the news, such a shame after more than a hundred and forty years, I hope they do rebuild, piers are a part of our heritage, Derek.

Oh dear - I really shouldn't have "like"ed this blog - sorry. (It's impossible to undo).

I have happy memories of so many of the South Coast piers. How sad that so many should meet their demise.

Our pier in Southport was in desperate need of renovation some years ago, and was closed to the public. Fortunately, local support meant that the money was found to restore it, with help from outside agencies, of course. I do hope similar help will be forthcoming for Eastbourne.

Its such a shame - hope that it can be saved.

Oh what a shock on reading this ,Denise..I haven't seen or heard the news today..We have happy memories of it from around this time last year, when we went on holiday, with Carole and Harry..Our Hotel was just across the road,so we spent quite a bit of time on there..especially that lovely Victorian tea room..so sorry, and I hope it is restored to its former glory..so sad..

I wonder why so many piers catch fire. Could it be deliberate ?? They never used to catch fire in times gone by, so why so many now ?

I'm sorry to hear of the fire. I enjoy walking on a pier, and it's sad that there don't seem to be so many of them these days.

I think the wiring is so old and the buildings so dry with no sprinkler systems in place Hywel.

That's a shame. It seems they haven't been looked after properly, and not brought up to date with regulations ...

Been watching it on news, such a shame, hope our Bognor pier stays safe...

Heard today they have managed to save two thirds of it.

Thanks for the news. Think this is more important than
Israel/Gaza nastiness. Newscasters seem unable to think
or England.
Did you stay at The Glastonbury Hotel Bloomer ?
I loved the Council Gardens.
An inspiration to us all.

We stayed at that one a few years ago,Diane..and sorry to say it was the worst hotel we have ever stayed in..It almost put us off going to Eastbourne ever again.. I sincerely hope it has vastly improved now..We stayed at The Burlington, which was ok,as it was the one used for the tour of Sussex Gardens, which were lovely..I agree, the Gardens and flower displays were wonderful in Eastbourne..

Well the good news is the pier will live to be enjoyed another day as only one third is destroyed.

I was pleased to hear that,Denise..I saw it on the news..What a bad place for it to start though..at the Entrance..It could have been a real tragedy if people were unable to get from the other end..Those Firemen did a sterling job, especially as it seemed as though it was difficult to get water.

Yes it was Bloomer it seems that over 100 people where in that building at the time and all got out unhurt.

31 Jul, 2014

Phew, that must have been so frightening..but thank goodness no loss of life or injuries..so very lucky...

31 Jul, 2014

Indeed Bloomer.

Yes The Glastonbury was under new management when I went. We had nice meals.
I went for a walk along the pier, there was a lovely silk
flower shop a little way along. Hope the people are safe.
They were doing some very clever arrangements.
In fact, I decided to do posies for my family graves here
at home, instead of bigger arrangements. Have done them
ever since. Much easier.
Remembered afterwards, the Council gardens are called The Carpet Gardens.

I'm glad to hear it is under new management,Diane,it was badly in need of changes to everything..It is five years since we were there, and there was talk then,of new management..
I do remember that little shop on the pier..and a good idea to make posies..no one was injured ,and all got off safely.thank goodness..Thanks for the reminder of the name of the Gardens..
