Seagull selection again

Reposted because of glitch with first posting!

Went to Brighton with a friend a week or so ago; there were plenty of seagulls, but few willing to keep still long enough for me to take a picture! I keep forgetting that I can take movies on my camera; at least then I’d be able to pick a frame out of that.

But I still got some pics; most of these are cropped to get the birds closer.

I sort of admire seagulls – at a distance! They’re so graceful, masters of the air – I read a poem at school, “Grey Gull” by Robert Service, and I can still remember it almost word for word.

But up close – they’re a lot bigger than they look when you see them hovering gracefully in the sky! I got mugged by one at Brighton some years ago – I was on the pier with a friend, we were eating hot dogs, and suddenly a seagull slammed into my hand, feet first, and the shock as well as the impact sent the remains of the hot dog flying. The bird that did it had no chance to get at it, half a dozen others were on it instantly. Maybe they work in teams.

I can still admire their looks, but living near the coast, they are noisy 24/7 in the summer, and make an awful mess on buidings, their babies squawk for months, and so they are not that popular in coastal areas.

Great pictures Fran...had a wee smile to myself re Lizziebee's comments about the babies - there was a baby seagul on top of a neighbour's roof last Sunday - mummy and daddy were obviously keen to see it gain it's independance - it squawked all day long. We very rarely see the seaguls around here therefore everyone thought it was distressed and almost the whole street was out watching it's antics :)

Absolutely excellent photos. I love sea-gulls too. I remember that we learned in the school, that English sailors gave them some strange name (do not remember it, unfortunately), referring to their clumsiness when on the land.
I like the glimpse on you of that one on the second photo from the bottom :)))

when I lived at home there was a landfill site pretty close by (it's got a hospital on it now) - the seagulls were pretty loud most days as they fought over whatver they could find.

Thanks, TT, Scottish and Kat - these are very much cut-down pics, and only a few that I took had non-blurred birds in them!

The "do not feed the birds" sign was actually further along the rail, but I managed to get it closer - lol you can see the join if you look for it.

They are very good photo`s Fran, love the 4th one down, I like the way they seem to crash land, I took loads whilst in Yorkshire, my daughter has gone off them now as their constant squawking kept her awake all night, she says they are worse than our dawn chorus, lol....

I don't know that I'd want to live close to a seagull colony - it's not exactly a musical chorus, is it? getting that noise all the time would tend to make one a bit less fond of them.

We once stayed at Burton Bradstock, a pretty west country village with lots of thatch and stone cottages. The seagulls were up early, very noisy and everywhere. At Hastings I came out of a shop. I had a 3/4 length coat on (new) those days long time gone. It got splattered with what looked like evil smelling custard ....only one source .....a seagull. Never got all the marks out. At Southport we sat down on a bench to eat icecream, and an evil looking, shifty one, settles on the bench too creeping into pecking range. Ice cream not enjoyed. I just Luuuuuuv seagulls. They look good over a Mull ferry with with distant mountains.....lovely photos Fran.

thanks, dear. lol "pirate birds" they are, in grace and romance and inner nastiness!

Smashing photos Fran. I love the indignant look on the face of that one by the 'Don't feed the birds' sign - every picture tells a story eh? :-))

I've seen pictures of signs "don't feed the birds, they will attack" but people do it anyway. Bit like the pigeons there used to be in Trafalgar Square, just as much of a nuisance, unhygenic, noisy rabble! But at least seagulls can fend for themselves, if they really have to, rather than mugging tourists!
