pansies still proliferating

I planted these in April or March; not done much too them, dead-headed them a bit once or twice, not given them any special TLC, but they’re still flowering, and in so many colours

wish I knew what’s causing the “bullet holes” in the petals, though.

I agree Snoop ..
pansies have pretty faces, don't they :o)

Lovely, and yes, such cheeky, pretty faces.
Could the holes be caused by those little grey slugs?

thanks TT and Snoop and Waddy

sigh, just think what a display I'd have if I'd spent some time on them!

not sure, Waddy, had lots of them at my old place, not so many here, but maybe that's cos i've not looked so closely, them being on the ground now and me having all the garden to look at. But one would think that munching insects would munch from the edge inwards, not sort of dive through the middle and leave such a neat hole!!

Mmm, you've got a point there.

Love the first pic Fran! :)

....I think they nibble the buds, that's why the holes are in the middle when the flower opens Fran. :)

thanks Karen, that trough is still full of colour. I've checked the pics as closely as I can, but all the holes seem to be in the outer petals. - at least the ones that I can see, there might well be more that i've not noticed *s*

They are still looking great. I just pulled the last of mine out the other day.
I had a little blue tit take a great dislike to one of my pots of blue ones - he/she pecked them to smithereens. I do wonder if it confused them for another blue tit - it was very vicious at times.

strange, Scottish: you'd think it would know the difference, especially when the vicitim didn't run away or defend itself! I lost five troughs of pansies last year to squirrels

Love the range of different colours that you can get from Pansies and Violas Fran :-)

They're lovely, aren't they? I bought two trays of them, and just planted them as they came to hand. The other trough is mostly blue-purple-white. Wonder if it'd do any good for me to cut them back and see if they come back?

I collect the seeds that form on the pods and save them for planting up the following year...works for me :-)

I'd never thought of saving the seeds! thanks for the tip. when should one collect them, when the flower is in full bloom, when it starts to fade or when it's officially "dead"?

11 Jul, 2014

The little seed pods open and the seeds inside dry. You can see them. I collect them when they open and pop the whole seed pod in a jar and when I have collected many of them and I have the time, I take them out of the pod with a pin or other small gadget. Do this in a bowl though Fran as the seeds usually go everywhere :-). I wrote a blog about it,,I collect viola seeds and pansy seeds in the same way..

thanks Richard. I'm visually impaired and hadn't noticed the seed pods, I'll have to take a closer look and start collecting!

You are welcome Fran ..

I had a close peer at my pansies, couldn't see any sign of a seed pod - there was a little hole in the centre of each flower, wondered if htat's where the seed pod was and had already fallen out. but some of the flowers looked fresh, and still no sign of seed pods. where should I be looking, please?

When the flowers die off Fran you will find a little green pod in the centre of the flower and this grows on until it splits into three pieces. The pieces open and inside each piece there will be the seeds. The seeds dry and then scatter. I cut off the seed pod at this point, before they have time to scatter, and put the seed pod in a container. I keep doing this until I have quite a few of them and every so often separate the seeds from the pod, ready for sowing again next year...good luck..let me know if I can assist you further.
